  • Fusion 12 with CNC'd Speaker Top for a Friend--Turned out Better than Expected

Tell me what you think. They measure to spec against the measurements on the DIY Sound Group website. This is the Fusion-12 Tempest with a twist on top (pun intended). Had the tops CNC routed from a very nice guy up in Pennsylvania at a reasonable price. Matched the solid cherry top with cherry veneer on the sides and finished with Danish Oil and wipe-on poly. Yes, again I opted for the black mirror finish for the front baffles and my arms nearly fell off from all the wet sanding. But they are really cool and I know my friend is going to be overwhelmed by how great they sound, and how custom they look.

William, nicely done! That is a very nice looking speaker and of course I am sure they sound fantastic as well. The glossy baffle is a classy touch and I am sure your friend will appreciate the extra effort all around. I thought about this kit myself many months ago, but never imagined as cool of an outcome as you have shown here. Thanks for posting.

VERY nice! The top is really a neat touch to an already nice cabinet.

Please report back. This is the speaker I have been trying to talk a coworker in to. He wants LOUD> Let me know please.

The cnc top is a sweet. I wanted to try a similar thing but assumed it would just be too expensive. Glad you found someone reasonably priced.

These speakers can reach some intense sound pressure levels. Having a decent power amp and good preamp will make a huge difference. I did a comparison with a "small" Yamaha receiver using the internal power amp, then using an Emotiva 80wpc multichannel amp driven by a separate analog preamp and the difference was night and day in terms of sound output and clarity. A decent home theater receiver with at least 75wpc (closer to actual, not rated), could power these things all day long I'm sure given the sensitivity. However if you want to get the most out of them, having a separate preamp/processor and power amp with a minimum of 100wpc rated will give you "live" dynamic sound levels your friend is probably craving.
