  • Cabrini Redux

So the Cabrini project I did several years ago proved to be more popular than I imagined it would be, and I have been meaning to get around to doing a follow-up but have not really found the time to do so until very recently.

Essentially, I targeted as simple a build as possible with these, although they are somewhat more complex than the original Cabrini due to flush mounted drivers. The spirit of getting them done as cheaply as possible while maintaining a minimum of performance remains in this iteration.

So anyways, on to the squigglies....

First up is the on-baffle, raw driver measurements:

I ended up with a four element crossover, which yields the following:

There you see the Achille's heel of budget drivers - a 1db sensitivity difference between the two woofers. Nothing a deft touch with the balance control can't knock out, though.

My biggest surprise is the non-linear distortion measurement:

That is SPL accurate at 1/2M. That is very good for many designs, almost striking on a system using a $11 woofer and $8 tweeter.

    The baffle dimensions:

Of course, the rest of the dimensions mirror the PE flat pack. Build these into a tower with the tweeter about 33" off the ground, and you will probably be very, very satisfied with them.

    The crossover:

Sorry PE, you do not carry a 2.2mH 20awg air core coil :( I had to get one from Erse direct. Meniscus will wind one for you, but it will cost you. Substitute the 18awg Jantzen air core if you like, but avoid the P-Core variant.

All in all, I believe in this design - enough to loan them out to some forum members for their review. Arlis will be picking them up on Monday, and hopefully he can get some listening in before some other members get their mitts on them.

I am still shaking my head in disbelief at their sound quality. They are not hi-fi, they do not dig deep (~80Hz in this cabinet) and will not blow the roof off - but I have been listening almost non-stop for three days and am still enjoying them.

Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Johnny, not second-guessing you, but was there any worthwhile improvement with a 2nd order and/or Zobel-like shaping circuit on the woofer? I'm pretty sure you simmed those.
Have you formed a listening impression yet? Just nosey.

I don't do simulations, and my listening impressions are in the post, as far as I review my own work anymore.

I'm unsure beating to death with more crossover would help. Everything you add, takes away. Changes phase, impulse, many things. This level of driver....Which is funny because you think they should suck but in fact don't...Its the next level where the dogs are, perhaps because these are "under"dogs? I digress....This level of driver are meant to be used with very simple crossovers. Designed as such. When you start to beat them up with too big of a hammer, they just become flat. Playing in the dirt is fun and there is a lot to be leaned from inexpensive drivers.....Mainly that they can sound damn good.

You don't mention which tweeter or driver you used. I can guess the driver is the grs 6.5 poly but what tweet? thanks.

Pretty sure it is this high-end ultra precision piece.

GRS 1TD1-8 1" Dome Tweeter 8 OhmDon’t throw away your classic speakers with blown tweeters! The GRS 1TD1-8 is a drop-in replacement for many classic OEM dome tweeters. Preserve the clarity of your classic speakers with these economical units, or add smooth highs to your affordable speaker project with this basic unit. It’s a lot of bang for the buck! The round faceplate of the 1TD1-8 fits the cutouts for most classic dome tweeters, while its shape reduces diffraction, preserving excellent on-axis response and detail. The 1" voice coil handles plenty of power, and the ferrite magnet assembly provides plenty of force for the lightweight dome, for dynamic reproduction. The 8-ohm impedance makes it compatible with most existing crossovers.

to few parts... not squiggly enough

good work JR, great budget build. i hope to hear these.

Another neato build , hope to hear these also in the near future JR. Looks like the tweeter is quasi horn loaded?

                  Re: Cabrini Redux

I haven't used but one pair of GRS drivers. OEM buy-outs may sure act like this: You've got what you bought. Which may not be bad at all. I'll say I've not had great luck with Goldwood's and leave it at that. I have an elderly pair of Radio Snack Nova 6B's (8" woofer 3" cone tweeter 1st order on both) that need a tweeter up-grade from the bargain-bin. The XO freq. on the Nova's is 3KHz supposedly, but the GRS measures like a drop-in fit. The price sure seems right.

                      Re: Cabrini Redux

Yeah, sorry - 6.5" GRS poly and the "high-end ultra precision piece" is that tweeter.

Tweeter is not really horn loaded per se, but it is recessed such that flush mounting is probably of only moderate benefit.

The only thing I gained with a 2nd order, damped or otherwise, on the woofer was an alarming rise in non-linear distortion through the crossover region. Doesn't need the extra components whatsoever.

Better luck in the future figuring out how to use the cheap stuff, Rickey.

Abracadabra! Things started to click when I tossed the simulator to the side and started doing it by ear. I do that with all my builds, though, so just got lucky on these drivers.

I ordered the drivers and resistors last night. I will be wrapping my own coil for this build I will be building a Tower to fulfill a certain WAF factor. Do I need to worry about over excursion?

You could always create a proper sized "box" with a solid horizontal brace... Or maybe JR could cook up a ported version, I don't think many (if any) GRS drivers are good in ported enclosures, the Qts is always super high.
