  • Home made talk box

I made a home made talk box from my peavy vypr15 guitar amp. What I did was wire a switch to direct the current from the amp to either the horn driver (for the talkbox) or the woofer for standard guitar playing. I used various PVC connectors to run the sound from the horn into vinyl tube that acts as a portal for the sound. Pictures coming soon (having an uploading problem)

    Dougman..

Looked like a good design for your Talkbox...You'll be joining the ranks of Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton in discovering endless new sounds out of your guitars.

Look forward to seeing your pictures.

Yeah, definitely post some photos and parts list (what driver did you use?). I have always thought that one of these things would be a lot of fun, in a 'Tell Me Something Good' sort of way.

I used the EMINENCE ASD1001 1" HF TITANIUM HORN DRIVER 1-3/8"-18 TPI (part number 290-525) and a DPDT HEAVY DUTY PADDLE SWITCH CENTER OFF (part number 060-598) for the switch... I'm still having problems uploading the pictures but for now I'll post a youtube video that inspired me to build it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqIqxM-BNp0

After watching that video, I am not sure if I could use one without drooling a river down the tube!

With some practice you do learn to control how much you drool

Finally figured it out. The maximum file size was too small and most of the pictures were 3-4mb each. I shrunk them down.

here I have the horn driver theaded into a piece of pvc and the pvc glued with epoxy into some scrap wood I had laying around with a hole drilled into it I also have an adapter inside there (cant remember the sizes) Click image for larger version

From there I needed something smaller to fit the vinyl tube into so I used a what I could find Click image for larger version

here I inserted the tube and it wast quite tight so I used a generous amount of silicone sealant to make sure no sound escapes. Click image for larger version

Let me know what you guys think. Personally I like the sound I get from it and am extremely happy with how it turned out... I haven't been able to stop playing it.

I hope your already thinking about making a stomp box switch for it ;) nice project.

Wow, that takes me back a ways... Used to be a guy at college, would play out on the quad, built one with a 5-6" woofer in a tiny sealed enclosure, battery powered amp, fully portable, etc. Quite the feat back in the late 70s. Said it was an experience to play, with resonances in your chest on certain notes, etc. Sounds like fun!

The thought has crossed my mind but given I do not have a mic or pa to use; the foot switch is rather useless to me because the woofer is roughly 3.5 trillion times louder than the horn driver for the talk box. whenever I switch the output I always need to turn the volume way down and adjust from there.

I thought about doing that with my mini OARNGE battery powered amp. Ended up scrapping that idea

You need a couple or resistors or a "L" pad in the feed to the squad box to adjust once and forget, then a stomp box makes sense.

What's amazing is how much sound is absorbed by the vinyl tube. I dont have any way to measure how many db I loose but it is significant.
