Wow, those are seriously impressive. Fantastic looking, that translam stuff is so cool looking. The whole thing came out great. Brave of you for trying an inlay! More guts than I.
Nice!

Thanks, the inlay was actually requested by my wife. I had actually been thinking of ways to break up the sides which are fairly large, and so the 'ray' was wrapped around. I used rosewood intended for guitar binding. She was concerned about how visible the miter joint might be once finished.
With the epoxy filler on, I could have made it less visible than it is above, but there's only so much that can be done to soften a line across the 'grain' like that. I can't say if it would have looked bad or not. The change in grain direction either side of the miter would have probably made it very visible between the two slabs. The inlay breaks it up and and I haven't noticed it at all. I did filling of both the inlay and the plys.
This photo is filling plys around the woofer route, but the same was done along the cut made for the inlay where chips had come out.
I think I have started forgetting how much work this was!
Really nice. I saw cjd's Ansonicas at Iowadiy, but did not get to hear them. If I needed more speakers, I would want to make a pair of Ansonicas.
At events like this there's always a little bit of conversation going on in the back of the room, you know just minor low volume discussions. When the Ansonicas came on the room was dead quiet. Nobody was focused on anything other than that speaker. They...were...that...good.
Where are earth can I buy feet like these? They are simlar to the ones I had on some Polk towers and I liked the look, but cant find anything like them anywhere.
Those are the ones. Thought it was Madisound that had them. Mine came from Solen but both sources have the same low-res drawing. There's one photo that makes them appear a little brown but they are black. I'd estimate my cabs at 75+ lbs and they seem sturdy enough.
Where did you pick up your plywood? Looks like a 13 ply?
That's correct. It's 3/4" (18 mm nominal) baltic birch plywood. Picked it up at www.amwoodinc.com which is local-ish to me. The speakers as I built them can be cut from two 5'x5' sheets.
Dude, killer work on these. I'm jealous! Excellent choice on the veneer and trans-lam match. (heavy figured, deep contrast, it exotic but doesn't take away from the more modern lines that the ply created). The inlay really made it all pop. Thanks for posting these you have given me enthusiasm to finish my "poor man's trans-lam" project I've been slacking on. I wish I thought about the inlay when I was building mine. For some reason I also wanted to try using that glass, metal or stone thin backsplash for your kitchen or bath as an accent or portion of a cabinet.
