  • Finished Build Pics

I know this might seem redundant because we have the gallery section, but I thought it might be neat to have one thread we can go and just peruse finished DIY speakers (maybe even make this a sticky). The gallery is cool, but going through all the different build threads can be daunting, having pics of finished builds in one place would be cool.

Could be very helpful for others to get build ideas and see what's out there, I really hope you guys take advantage of this and post what you've done!! For example...

Edit: I attached build thread links to the kit names.

Blues MTM. Unfortunately I don't have a build thread to the MTM in the pics. My cousin and I built those using PE's curved, 1cf pre-made cherry cabinets.

It all looks great. Those Hivi speakers in the blues are some sexy looking speakers.

I kinda hoped this thread would blow up more, seems like a great idea to put all the builds in one place. Maybe link to a kit too. Post up gentlemen!! Let's see pics of your builds

Here are a pair of Aviatrix I completed last year. They are sealed towers with the Dayton dvc 10" subs on the sides powered by two of the Yung sd200-6 sub amps.

Please post a link to the blues build.
You really do nice work. I really enjoyed the statement build.

The only thing that could make this better would be links to the build threads.

                  Re: Finished Build Pics

Love the full-size Statements. Excellent workmanship. I wish I'd started taking photos of all mine. I started out in the late 70s building cabinets for different Speakerlab models, but even the few Instamatic pics I took are no longer around. I do have some old Polaroid shots I've scanned along with some 35mm ones, but I didn't really start to document until after I joined Tech Talk 15 years ago. I finally got a good digital camera about 10 years ago. My old Olympus Trip 35 finally went TU on a motorcycle trip and I lost all 36 photos on that roll...some were speaker pics too.

A rebuild of some MTMs a friend brought me. A brand I never heard of, could've been a white-van variety because the SQ was very poor:

Another rebuild of a retail brand, using Dave Tenney's D8 MTM. The driver locations were not to the plan, but most anything would've been better than the stock SQ. They ended up sounding amazing anyway and are still going strong after about 12-13 years:

Using some buy-out PE drivers and a much fiddled-with XO to get the overall SQ "right".

                    Re: Finished Build Pics

I forgot you can only attach 5 pics per post. Here's some more.

I took some of those "Book"-shelf speakers and used a Vance Dickason design with Bravox 3.5" woofers and a TB tweeter. A huge hit, I made a bunch of them. They needed a sub of course, but whether it was 5 for HT or a pair for 2-channel, with a sub they really outperformed their looks:

The small 2-ways where I didn't have enough XO experience. The DefTech 5.25" woofers and a buy-out Seas tweeter. Shawn A. volunteered to help with the XO. He had a pair of the woofers, so I sent him the tweeters for measurement and XO design. Wow, what a great-sounding little speaker resulted from Shawn's expertise. A girlfriend has them in her art studio and they see daily use and enjoyment:

The very first speakers I ever did, building my own cabinets. My venerable Speakerlab S2, which changed countless minds and attitudes about that form of DIY vs retail. These lead me to build so many cabinets for different Speakerlab models, all after an evenings worth of side-by-side with a variety of known name-brands. Even the most stubborn and negative sorts could not deny the SQ and imaging improvements. It seems the tweeter is too far away from the woofer, but I built them exactly like the measured drawing using a friends old Craftsman 1940-something 8" table saw. It was the imaging and the soundfield that hooked everyone, instantly noticeable when comparing to other speakers. I still have the cabinets and the tweeters, but the woofer surrounds rotted around '95 and my first attempt at re-foaming failed and rendered those Peerless 10" woofers inoperable.

A friend's EPI 2-way cabinets turned into amazing, using Lou's Topaz design. I won't go into my usual description of the retail and the Topaz differences, but my friend was completely knocked over with the SQ improvements. I was too, and the EPI was a good design. No comparison at all.

I have so many more, but the last pair were these Statement Monitors. I knew my speaker building days were were coming to a close, as my disability kept getting worse and no procedure or treatment could stop it from degenerating. I had to collaborate on the build with a local forum member, bungalow_ed, because my abilities were waning at that point. The experience was great, working with Ed, and it would've taken much longer for me to do it on my own. Now with the flat-pack kits, I might attempt to put together a pair of Jeff's Solstice...I'll still need help from a friend, but he said he'd be happy to assist. Walnut with Tiger maple on the baffle. Ed has a vacuum bag for the veneer, and I don't think I could've done that kind of work w/o it. Enough has been said about their SQ, but I can't think of a better way to close out my long "career" of building and re-purposing so many speakers that changed countless minds about the validity and value of the DIY approach to speakers.

Thank you!! Unfortunately I don't have a build thread for that particular one, my cousin and I made those for him using PE's 1cf curved cherry cabinets. If you're interested, send a PM and I'd be glad to answer any questions. I have (basically) the same kit in some MLTL cabinets Paul K designed for me that I use in my shop, I listen to almost every day and I'm still very fond of them. Great kit for the money .

Awesome pics and nice work BTW guys!! I wish I could hear those Aviatrix, I almost went that route but designed the Blues instead. I'd love to hear those with the sub. Nice work John, obviously you like woodworking and speakers
