    Re: My Classix II

It's been almost a week since I finished this build and I gotta say these are awesome! I am super impressed with the Classic II's, they really do sound outstanding. The highs are nice and clear without being harsh and the low end is deep and full and when I push them add a bit of rumble to the room...

I don't need subs but i feel like the build is incomplete without them, so I am planing on a pair of UT 10's in the 1.25 ft3 sealed box. I don't have any room for them so they are going to have to go under my speaker stands. I will duratex them to match the stands which should look pretty cool.

My issue is that this arrangement will give me an overall hight of 55" and a tweeter hight of 52" which puts the tweeter about 1 foot above my ear when I'm siting. Is that to high? I have sat on the floor and listened and it seems that the highs get a bit louder when I'm under them. I can tone it down with the EQ if need be but it's hard to tell what the final outcome will sound like with out doing it.

Too high. Build the bass bins to replace the stands, or less optimally turn the Classix upside down at the very least. Avoid EQ (ESPECIALLY boosting).

I was planning on a sub or 2 but I really think I'm gonna be good to go with this setup as is.

Andy, I used 3/8" Techflex http://www.parts-express.com/techfle...black--082-332, banana plugs http://www.parts-express.com/parts-e...-type--091-330, and 3:1 heat shrink to make pants.

Mike, great work. The port flanges that don't have holes are usually meant as a press-fit with a bit of glue. I use a little epoxy on the back side or inside the mounting hole. Haven't had one come loose yet.

The plan with the subs as stands, designs are worked up with a certain height range in mind...like 32" to 36", 38". Getting too far away from that can affect imaging and dispersion. A foot is definitely out of the range of the design parameters. rvsixer mentioned turning the Classix upside down with the woofer on top. Not ideal, but it might sound OK to you. You already noticed the SQ changes sitting "under" the tweeter's height. The EQ will knock down the forwardness, but won't fix the imaging and other soundfield issues that are introduced when they're up too high. I see a lot of projects that use the sub boxes as the stands, so look into that option. Even if you need a spacer between the sub box and the Classix, it'll be way better than those stands on top of the sub box. Try to stay within a couple inches of recommended tweeter height. Or a short stand to keep the tweeter where it needs to be.

How about this: that sub box is 15.25" high, factor in an inch or so for some "feet" or spikes on the bottom of the sub box. The Classix at 14" high with 1"-1.5" for some feet/spikes on the bottom of the Classix, where the Classix sits right on the sub box (no stands), you're at almost 32". I'd do that, with a small adjustment to the feet/spike length depending on the type you get, you can get to the proper tweeter height. And using that method, they'll be more stable than stands on top of the sub boxes...if you have kids/pets, that could be a plus. Let us know what you're thinking and what you come up with.

          Re: My Classix II

Thx for the suggestions guys. Using the sub box as a stand could work and is not a bad idea at all. I have seen it before but I was thinking my overall height would be to low.

On another point, after the stink eye text's from wifey last night to turn it down, I may forgo the sub's all together.
