  • Apex jr Velodyne buyout speakers

I built a pair of small speakers using some Velodyne buyout components available from Apex jr. The first three items on this page. There is a link to a review which gave me the info needed to build these.

    http://apexjr.com/speakerstuff.html

I used 5/8" particle board and biscuits. Routed the holes and all the edges were chamfered. Shellac, drywall spackle, and Rustoleum texture paint. Surface mounted the drivers. I told Steve at Apex I would push his buyout items if I liked the results. I do. Anecdotally, they sound very nice in my computer 2.1 system.

Finished. Interesting corners resulting from a triple chamfer junction.

That's a very nice build. I like the color combo with the texture paint. Good job on the chamfers too, those came out really good.

Nice job! I like the stands too.

I had seen those drivers on his web page and they seemed interesting for a small project. Does he have a lot of them? They come in a 4 Ohm and 8 Ohm version. I assume you used the 8 Ohm?

Any measurements you did or parameters you found and did you use the x-over he also sells or did you create your own?

Yes, I assumed the 8 ohm was for the MT. Wrong, per Steve at Apex. The original system had a MTM center which used two 8 ohms in parallel. The 4 ohm is for the MT. The crossover, a real crossover with caps and coils and resistors, is on the back of the terminal plate. It has wires with connectors to the drivers, truly plug and play. Apex only has crossover assys for the MT. Apex has a few of these left. He's running kind of low on one component, don't remember which. Those of you interested should contact Steve at Apex jr. I have no crossover skills, I was attracted to this project by the low price, good review, and premade crossover. I was surprised and pleased by the "full, rich sound" when I connected them to my computer 2.1 system. This system has a TB W8-740C sub with a PE 2.1 plate amp. I listened to Pandora, Youtube and the CD from Iowa DIY 2014. I have no measuring equipment, which is why I described the sound "anecdotally".

            I like 'em a lot!
the sort of "chewy" particle board, the chamfers and the color - just sort of perfect.

              Not perfect, but thank you.

Those turned our really nice! I'm very surprised to see such a nice (for a commercial speaker) crossover from the OEM.
