  • The Miura's - A Dayton CF120 Build

It's been a bit of a road to get here but I finally got these done! As I said in my build thread here quite a few of us won these drivers as door prizes over the summer at various DIY events. I know Wolf has simmed a design with this driver - the Mangusta's - but I don't think anyone else has a design with them yet.

Design goals for this project was for a small two way for kitchen/bedroom use that didn't take up too much room and was fairly inexpensive to build, so I paired the woofer with the Dayton ND25FA tweeter. Now that the CF120's price dropped almost $20 these can be made for about $150 a pair plus the cabinets. The cabinet is small at only 5lt and tunes the woofer to 60hz with 2x6" port. Crossover is a 12db on the woofer and 18on the tweeter centered around 3k. I did struggle with the crossover a bit, adding a notch filter and a few other components trying to smooth the curve out, but ended up back with a simple 6 component circuit. Sometimes less is more I guess. They are finished with a Maple veneer and have 4 coats of rubbed on poly. I picked the lighter coloured veneer as I wanted a nice black/white contrast to the speakers.

I set them up last night in the garage with one of those SMSL chip amps that Rory had posted about the other week. I have to say the amount of bass that came out of these was pretty impressive for a little 4" driver. Compared to my ID entry this year these guys are a little more laid back on the top end but have a pretty nice overall response.

    In room response,

    Impedance,

    Final sim, (I think...)

This was a fun little project and I look forward to listening to them quite a bit over the holidays. They will be my main speakers for the next little while as I sold my ID speakers last week, and I haven't started my next build yet (an SB floorstander).

    Merry Christmas!

Those look terrific. Glad you used a larger port, I've built smaller speakers w/ 4" woofers and have regretted the 1" D port I used, it chuffed quite a bit.

I really like that driver combination. Great finish. Simple x-o. That's first rate project that I think people would like to build.

They look great. How do they sound in the midrange? The carbon cones do look a lot more expensive than the price (are Dayton phasing these out?)

Going to be confusing since mattsk8's 3 ways have the same name.

Changed the name to the Miura Jr's hopefully that doesn't confuse people.

Nice project Derek. I'd say you got that vaneering thing down pat.

                    Funny thing is that:

Mattsk8 I believe announced the name at Meniscus in September, and stated it 'Miera', not 'Miura'.

I applaud Derek for changing his name of his project to avoid confusion, but Mattsk8 actually was second in line.

Not that the name means anything at all to me, I honestly could just change it on mine... But they were Miura, named after the mid-engine Lamborghini. This fit because I later also found out that Lambo got the name from the Miura Ranch in Spain, which was well known for raising hard to ride bulls. And since those 3 ways were such an uphill battle for me, I thought it fit. I actually came up with it back in June, but I don't have a thread to prove that.

But seriously Derek, your build looks incredible and I think the fact that you finished yours prior to me finishing mine (mine are still MDF :o), plus you technically announced it first in that thread Ben linked, means you should have it. Or if you're OK with it, keep Jr too. Either way, nice build and it's just a name.

Then I misunderstood you in GR. You said (phonetically) 'Me-air-uh'. If you're british, the normal would be 'Myoo-ruh' (Top Gear), but most on this side of the pond say 'Me-er-uh'.

Nope. I helped Matt with this project from day one. It was never called "Miera" and was started long before September. apparently you are "mis-remembering" because Matt gave his presentation on the speakers at Meniscus and explained the name was from the Lambo car with the same name, it was never Miera. Ben you would have a melt down if some one used a name that you had already used for one of your designs. Adding "Jr" is not good enough, the name needs to be changed.
