  • Daughters new system

Well it has been quite a while since my last post. I finished my AAS in Mechatronics and am almost done with my AS in Electronics Engineering. My daughter is turning 14 soon, so for her birthday I decided to upgrade her audio to a real starter system instead of the little junk boombox she has currently. Unfortunately I don't really have much time to design, so for my daughter's upcoming b-day, I decided to purchase commercial instead of build. I am curious if anyone has had much experience with these...

I have already ordered them, just the DIY'er in me can't help but wonder if they will need tweaking... 😅

Lepai LP-S60 4x25W Desktop Mini Amplifier with Remote USB MP3 Media Card FMLepai's LP-S60 is an all-in-one mini amplifier modeled off of a car stereo that features an FM tuner, on-board MP3 decoder with SD/MMC and USB input, stereo RCA audio in with pass-through stereo RCA audio out, an IR remote control, as well as power output for four speakers. The built-in LCD display shows you the mode of operation as well as displaying time elapsed for MP3 files and the radio station tuning frequency. Using the scan function via the faceplate or remote control places the LP-S60 into scan mode which autosaves radio stations into one of five locations for quick selection.Front mounted treble, bass, and volume controls, as well as a four function EQ (accessible via the remote control or the volume knob), allow you to dial in the sound to match your taste and get the most out of your speakers. A wide input voltage range of 9 to 14.4 VDC allows the LP-S60 to be used in automotive or mobile applications. Included with the amplifier are: an IR remote control, a 12 VDC, 3A power supply, and a 16" long FM antenna. A removable trim ring is included for flush mounting applications. The faceplate mounted stereo 3.5 mm auxiliary input jack offers quick MP3 player and smartphone connection.Specifications: • 4 x 25W max (output power is dependant upon power supply) • Power requirements: 9 to 14.4 VDC, up to 5A • DC power input jack: 2.1 mm x 5.5 mm • Stable down to 2 ohms • THD: <1% • Signal-to-noise ratio: >80 dB • Frequency response: 20-20,000 Hz • Input impedance: 47k ohms • FM tuner frequencies: 87.5 to 108 MHz • FM receiver sensitivity: 16 dB • FM signal-to-noise ratio: 60 dB • Channel separation: 39 dB • Dimensions (including feet and trim ring): 7-3/8" W x 5" D x 2-3/8" H.

http://noaudiophile.com/Dayton_B652_Air/ You might could take a look at this- good choices for a kid's rig. My daughters have some skinny TLs (younger one) and some coral alnicos respectively, and they enjoy listening to music through them.

+1 on the Lepai, I have 2 and will be fine for your daughter. I haven't heard the speakers but I'm sure a large step up from a boom box! You will soon be yelling for her to "turn it down"!

I like noadiophile, hadn't seen that site before. I can appreciate a man that is willing to drop F-bombs in speaker reviews.

To me it was down to earth, but the meat of the article with measurement's was what I appreciated. Being ex navy I don't pay much attention to the language, even though I am trying myself to stop using offensive language as much.

Well everything came in yesterday, very fast shipping! Unfortunately when testing today I found that the left RCA line input isn't working. At first I thought it may have been an issue with the new DVD player, because both channels function normally under FM mode. However, I decided to use a known good CD player and retest with the same issue resulting. So I quickly called PE (before the 4pm shipping deadline) and they are promptly sending me a new unit! As a side note, I got the opportunity to put a voice to the name MattP since he was the one who answered my call. Thanks so much to PE and Matt for their continued excellence in customer service. This is the real reason we have all come to love PE and this forum.

Okay... The Lepai can't seem to go up very high in SPL without getting really distorted. Lots of static. I don't mean at extreme volumes either, we are only talking at normal conversation levels here... I wonder if upgrading the PS will resolve this or if it is a mismatch with the bookshelves (though I can't imagine that being the case). It does it on both amps also. Any thoughts?

The model of Lepai might help a lot in determining the problem

If it is the stock PSU you are using, upgrade it. The one I received from PE had a pretty tepid power supply. Found a 12V 5A power supply elsewhere and that really brought the Lepai to life. If you have the 2020A, make sure the tone controls are bypassed. I found there was almost no headroom with even a moderate amount of low end boost applied, even with beefier PSU.

If you are using other than 2020A, I bet the same rules would apply.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Ill second Johnny's advice. They really need a better power supply. Snt need to spend a fortune bit a good 12V5A works wonders with them.

The power supply that comes with them is because the really wont sell many without the quick plug and play.
