Ridiculous build and thread. BRAVO! Im interested on your grain filling tips. I used some wayer based stuff before that was clear with so-so results. It filled grain and matched color but is a hair hazey. It was a white container with blue labels aqua coat i think.

I'll have a pricey build coming up i want to get fancy with i will probably bug you with questions and stuff on how you did the design/cad stuff for this concept to turn it unto a reality.

Thank you Sir! The only other grain filler I've tried in the past was the Behlen Pore-O-Pac (white can/blue label) and I was not happy with it at all, very hazy. The Crystalac was easy to work with and did not change the appearance of the wood once dry. Be glad to help in any way I can on the design/cad stuff, just shoot me a PM whenever you're ready.

I appreciate it Sydney and will not shortcut whatever means I use to pack these and transport them. I remember seeing one member at MWAF that had a dolly completely wrapped in pipe foam, cool idea and may have to borrow that also as these are quite awkward to carry now without being able to place a hand in the woofer openings.

Seems if you pack them well with foam in a box, then another layer of foam or crumpled heavy paper and another box, that will be indestructible, then you can strap all that down to keep it from shifting.

I shipped the Fatboys out to MWAF that way last year and had absolutely not a scratch on them. "Box in a Box"

Wow! This is quite the project! Great work, Kevin! And a very nice set of well framed pictures, too. The dramatic lines and smooth curves are impressive! Can't wait to see these at MWAF.

My custom cradles were built by bolting two long 2x4's to a standard hardware store dolly. I then installed custom cross braces at critical points to hold the linehoppers firmly in position. Old carpeting material was streached out over the 2x4's to prevent scratches. Carpeting was stapled in areas that did not touch the linehoppers. I called them the "dollyhoppers" in keeping with my overall theme.

My pictures are on another hard drive, so, when I get home, I will check for photos and dimensional drawings.

Something to think about...

I've had a few larger/heavier speakers that I've taken to MWAF and if the 'friction points' are not cinched down real hard, there can be 'rubbing' ...
For example, If you use a soft cotton sheet for a cover over the speakers, then whatever cushioning material you choose after that, all the 'jiggling' over the many miles and bumps can rub a few spots on the speakers. I had one spot that looked a bit different by the time I got home, that was the duller finish of the two, my Cello's. The Classic Tension Headaches fared better, they had a glossy finish.

I've thought of applying a few sheets of cheap shelf liner to spots that would be likely to rub on the journey if I ever make another heavier or larger set.

Of course, you have access to that 'expanding foam' stuff at work... You could put each speaker in a big box with a left and right bag and cut a piece of card stock roughly down the middle of the front/back to act as a separating line. Just slide the box off the top and take the left and right pieces off like a clam shell.

Man, can we overthink things or what?

I wish. Spent a little time Friday afternoon programming a preliminary setting for the MiniDSP and played that for a couple of hours on the one enclosure that's complete. That was fun! The output from just the one enclosure is darn impressive, can't wait to hear both of them playing together. By late Friday night, knew I was sick. The flu has been going around at work. Spent all of Saturday in bed or on the couch. Was feeling a little better last night and thought the worst was behind me but then the fever came back with a vengeance. Seems like most of the people at work had it for at least a few days.

If I can muster up some energy today, will try to finish loading the drivers into the other enclosure. Also need to work with Rick and get his input on the programming.

Thanks for the insight on transporting them Tom, I'll keep that in mind. And I guess I should thank you for the reminder of how far away MWAF is! Man I've got a lot to get done in between now and then.

I like using fleece blankets for transport as the drawer liner will stick and peel onto the cabs in the heat. Been there done that.

Here are a few pics and dimensional data for my custom cradle. Please note that I only built one of these and it was only used to transport the linehoppers, one at a time, from my car to the resting place inside the venue.

Your speakers have a continuous slope and curve, so a cradle may not work. Your speakers might slip loose from the dolly when you attempt to push it forward. My Linehoppers have a 13 7/8 x 8 1/8 x 5" upper back side protrusion that is cradled securely between my custom 1x3" cross member supports. This protrusion fits like a glove and keeps the Linehoppers firmly in position as I push the dolly in any direction.

2 42.5" long 2x4's (cut from hand selected 8 foot long 2x4 at lumber yard)
2 15.75" long 1x3's (for cross members)
1 17.5 x 30" dolly with four 3 inch swivel casters (local hardware store)
2 4" swivel casters (to replace the original two 3" swivel casters)
2 4" fixed casters (to replace the other two original 3" swivel casters)


I bolted two 42.5" long 2x4's to the dolly with eight carrage bolts/nuts/washers. I also bolted and screwed two 1x3 cross members to form a cradle for the upper Linehopper protrusions. To protect the finish, I stapled some old discarded carpet remnants to the 2x4's and 1x3's. And I replaced all 4 casters so I could increase ground clearance and have the ability to push the dolly in a straight line, just like a grocery store cart.

Hope this information is useful, should you attempt to develop something along these lines.

4thtry Thanks Bill, I appreciate you providing pics and info on the "DollyHoppers". I'm sure there will be a few ideas borrowed if you don't mind.

Started feeling a little better late this afternoon and decided to play around with the DSP some more. Just have to say it, might be growled off the forum for it, but I think all newcomers, newbies, what ever you want to call us could learn a great deal faster if they picked up a DSP and Mic to play around with first. Not only seeing but hearing your adjustments "Real Time" is amazing and educational at the same time. To be able to flatten a peak or raise a valley and hear the difference after the adjustment is just too cool. I cant think of a way to train an ear any faster than this. If any of you are on the fence about trying the DSP, once you take the leap, you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner. Tons of fun would be an understatement.

bcodemz (Brian) spent a little bit of time on the phone with me Friday afternoon and walked me through a quick session on the DSP. I made a few more adjustments this evening and here is the result: I haven't spoke with Rick about how to adjust or how much to adjust the bass region on the arrays yet. I have some issues with room boundaries also.

KK: Re: protecting the babies during a move.
I like the idea of using bubble wrap or carpet padding, as you already discussed.

My "bright" idea is to then cover the sides with cheap 1/4 inch paneling.
I don't think you would need a complete box, just covering the sides should do the job.
I think that would really protect them, and be fairly cheap and easy.
