Overnight Sensation build

Have some inlaws that are rather musically inclined but have probably never experienced musical reproduction outside of WallyWorld sourced gear. So, I've decided to build them a pair of Overnight Sensations for Christmas. The build should be affordable and perform above its price tag. More importantly, it could open up them up to a comfortable chair, a refreshing beverage, and hours of late evening musical enjoyment. If time and $ allow one of the Sure t-amps may also be included.

Except for the top and plinth, the box will be stained/cleared solid pine lumber, [email protected] and [email protected] Due to no longer having a table saw the box dimensions differ from Paul C.'s drawing, basically the planks remain their native width. Edges were cut using a $30 ebay 45* miter lock router bit. The box increases in width and depth and decrease in height resulting in ~ .125cf^3 volume increase.

Below are Paul C's drawing and my first attempt ever using Sketchup. Are the changes in dimensions enough to necessitate altering the crossover or altering the sound enough for concern? Thoughts?

Certainly not as far as your inlaws are concerned.

You might want to shorten the vent, maybe 1/2"? - but personally, I wouldn't bother.

Read a thread by JavadS where he built cement board into the enclosure ... that got me to wondering, might it also benefit this project by gluing the cement board onto the interior walls? One goal was to keep this project $ reasonable, the board is cheap, easy to find, messy but otherwise fine to work with, besides my dimensions were a bit larger than PaulC's, the added 1/4 should bring it closer to his.

Also, not sure if this is too late, but to ensure BSC isn't affected I'd shoot to keep the width the same as well as driver placement in relation to the top of the enclosure, depth and height can more safely be changed.

Too late, no longer have a table saw. Trying to build a jig to cut ~1" of a 1x was going to be time cousuming and, iffy' for me. Drivers will be placed at PaulC's designed heights, the tweeter will have the same offset, but the woofers will be centered on a 1" wider baffle. Hopefully this won't effect sound too much. Thoughts?

Generally, I'm more interested in sound than looks but since these are going to someone else they must not only sound good but also look nice. I'm hoping they "finish" good enough to impress my BIL.

I doubt the average civilian would notice any difference, and they'll be thrilled with the sound either way. For those of us insane enough to measure FR and compare one speaker to dozens of others, then it would be more worth worrying about.

If you'd like, generally a good idea to help with diffraction but not necessary, anything less than a 1.5-2" radius won't make a big effect at the frequencies that matter, but a 3/4" is quite common.

same here ... i was looking for some measurements of how much difference a 1/2" roundover made , but i can't find them ...

Ahh, good stuff, I apologize if I spoke incorrectly, I'll have to dig up the link to an author that did a bunch of tests and couldn't see too big of a difference with less than 2", I've heard it repeated as well.

I'm a fan of roundovers, I have done up to 1.5" on many of my builds when space allows it, any info to support it I'm more than happy to read about, please post anything you have filmslayer and PWR RYD And thank you Millstonemike, I'll review that as well.

Javad , what i was taught is that any round over is better than a sharp edge , but the difference between a 1/2" and 1" is very marginal . but like you said it really starts to show up around 2-3" . the small test i did was when i was building my surrounds . i measured before and after the 1/2" round over and there was a difference . unfortunately that was 2 years ago and i have a ton of measurements since making them very hard to find ... i'll keep looking tho .
