  • Crossover modeling tutorial

I've been wanting to document this for a while now, since it felt like a lot of the documentation on modeling a crossover was kind of scattered and / or for older versions of Office and Windows. I finally put together a start to end resource based on how I've been doing crossover design and modeling using SPLCopy, Response Modeler, WinPCD, and XSim.

    Here it is

And now I'm throwing it at you guys for a little error checking. Before you really tear into it, here are some friendly requests:
    • For now anyway, I'm not expanding the scope of the article into details on what a crossover is or the electronics theory behind them
    • For any of the software guys I've published screenshots of, if you have any issues at all with the content let me know and I'll update / remove
    • Be nice
What I'm hoping for is a check to make sure I didn't say anything erroneous. If there is anything that could be added to make it more helpful as a tutorial, let me know and I can expand.

Wow, you must have put some time into this, thanks. I will take a harder look this evening after work, it looks to be very helpful.

It is nicely designed tutorial, but our Frequency Response Blender is a better tool in my opinion than the Response Modeler is for blending and phase extraction. I'm surprised you're not using it.

Never tried it, but I will now. Thanks Jeff!

              Good job!
In the first paragraph you mention simming for woofers, did you mean to say " subwoofers" ?

                  Very nice,
I have always used excel and PCD, I have never looked into WinPCD. Lately my excel sheets have been lagging with input changes. Thanks to this write up, I will check out WinPCD now! Thanks so much for this.

For me as an absolute beginner, it has been quite the journey to bring together all the information required to design a set of speakers. Would have loved to have your tutorial 2-3 months ago.
                      Nice job! Thank you

                          Yes, that's more accurate, thanks!.

Updated... and linked to my earlier article when I built a RSS265 sub. I went through T/S parameters and BassBox Pro 6 at that time.

A while back I produced a video of a walk-through on PCD. It is a large video file, and is somewhat dated and I no longer use PCD. However, I think we will be hosting it at Midwest Audio Club website at some point. It could serve as a good supplement.

I may produce a companion video on using Xsim, however that software pretty much demands in-situ measurements and requires a higher degree of proficiency on crossover design so I am not sure how I would be approaching the content.

Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Videos are a great idea. I would throw them on YouTube rather than a private site, mostly for the better infrastructure and future proofing against dropped DNS registrations etc. Personally, I prefer reading with pictures, but I think I'm just old school in that regard.
