  • Forum Search Help: Tips for the New Version

Accepting the new forum software has been difficult for a lot of the forum members, including myself. I had only been using the previous version for a couple of years, so I can just imagine how some of the veterans feel. The older version just seemed more user friendly. Learning how to accomplish some of the things you could do in the previous version on this new version has been a slow process, for me anyway. The new one takes some getting used to but I'm starting to come around. The biggest frustration I felt after the change was related to doing searches. It was completely different and quite frankly, useless. After a little studying and fiddle farting around, I have finally figured out how to get the results I was getting with the previous version. So, the following are examples of how to do that.

Lets start with the basic search engine. For this example, I typed "speaker stands" in the search box and click on the magnifying glass icon. 500 results on 35 pages. Not gonna work for me guys, don't know about you. Click image for larger version

Let's filter it a little further. Click the down arrow by the search box and then click on "Advanced Search". Click image for larger version

Size:	34.1 KB

It should bring up a screen that looks like the following.

Lots of useful filters to use here but I've only used a couple to get the results I'm looking for. If you're only interested in finding results where the words were in the title of the thread, click the "Title Only" box to the right of the search word. The new result is a little better, but not by much, 365 results, 25 pages. Still needs more filtering.

This is when I found the setting that was driving me nuts. "View" down in the bottom left hand corner was set to "Default". Default will bring back every response to any one of those threads and you have to go thru page after page just to see new threads. Change it to "Topics" and it will bring back results that are similar to how it used to work, original threads only. 36 results and 3 pages.

Here is another example: Hope Mr. Bagby doesn't mind me using him in this example.

Let's say I want to look up "The Quarks", a very popular small format speaker. If you use the standard search engine, you will get 428 results. If you filter that by only looking for "The Quarks" in the title, you will get 293 results. Filter it with a couple of more things, the creator of the original thread and started post only, and you can narrow it down to one thread.

Here are the results of the search:

      Hope this helped guys.

This is helpful. Thanks for the guided tour. The "topics" is something I didn't know to use. Maybe I can find something now.

The newer format has actually deterred me (and others) from using this forum nearly as much. It was setup very well prior. vBulletin has typically been very easy to use with a nice layout. This version...not so much. In fact I'd say it's pretty horrible.

              Thanks for the tips Kevin.
I think the 'view' default is there to give you a multitude of choices to look at, synonymous with being in a giant store where there is no signage to help you find what you are looking for ON PURPOSE so you will find other stuff you didn't come for but ended up getting anyway.

I had horrible luck searching with the old software as well. I never noticed that "View" drop down before, so I'll have to give it a try. Another great way to search is to type your search terms in Google and then follow whatever you want to search with by site:http://techtalk.parts-express.com/

This will search for pages on this site and Google's search is much better than the built in forum search.

Google does work great for a specific search such as "The Quarks". It didn't work as well for me on a general search term like "speaker stands", brought back all kinds of stuff. I need to try your suggestion and see how it works. Thanks.

I'm glad some of you guys are finding this useful. Carl (I hope that is your first name) makes a good point about why the software acts the way it does and I agree it was probably on purpose. I would add that this is a "customizable" software that PE can make changes to. We just have to be specific about some of our gripes and maybe they'll entertain adjusting a few things more to our likings. If there was a way to set "View" to display "Topics" in my user settings, that's the way I would have mine. No such option at this time.
