  • Ipad Air or Samsung S2 Tablet?

I'm going to get one of these this week to replace my laptop. Give me your pros and cons regarding what we do here. ie: crossover design, measurement add-ons, streaming music or using JRivers-ish software. Note I am NOT living in the Apple world. This will be the only Apple device in the house so no apple tv here. I only care about how they function in the real world
Thanks and don't be afraid of offending me. I'm open to either model.

What software do you use currently on your laptop? I would probably look to see if those programs would work on either device and make my decision based on that.

The iPad, being an Apple device will not run any of the software we need. IMO the screen is too small anyway. I mainly use mine for email and surfing.

Sorry but I don't have any experience with Android devices.

      Good luck! Mark

The iPad can't run any of the modeling software for crossover design. You can get some measurement tools from the App Store, it you won't have way to connect a calibrated mic. The best part about the iPad though, is that it makes streaming music super simple if you have an AppleTV or airplay enabled device. I don't really know anything about the Samsung, it if it runs Android software and not Windows, you are going to run in to many of the same problems. My recommendation would be to keep your laptop if it isn't broken to use strictly for speaker building.

I'm facing a similar choice, seeing that my current laptop has decided it no longer likes its battery. What I'm looking at? One of the current 2-in-1 devices, like the Yoga 710.

I recently picked up a refurbished HP 11.6 inch laptop with 8GB RAM and a 128MB SSD for about $225 from Overstock.com. So far so good.

Ever consider a Microsoft Surface? They run everything a PC can and make a decent tablet. Between Android and iOS, iOS has more refined apps but Androids are cheaper.

If you get a Samsung, lets hope it doesn't catch fire like their smartphones or explode like their washing machines!

Some good thoughts guys. I knew the iOS didn't like modelling software in the past but had hoped it had caught up by now.

Jim, I had looked at netbooks but EVERYONE I talk to tells me NO! How do you like yours? Functionality? Pros/Cons?

Brian and wogg, I've never heard of those. Will look them up. Thanks.

Welcome. I use a Surface Pro 3, fantastic full powered PC in a tablet, but expensive. The smaller Surface is pretty good for general use, and much cheaper. Another note: I use all kinds of modeling software on the SP3, and can even run Arta with nothing but the portable iMM6 mic plugged in the combo headphone / mic jack.

I have a Samsung Tab S (previous version of the S2 tablet) with a 10.5" OLED screen. I use it for general tablet uses and especially for video streaming via the internet. The high resolution screen is perfect for video streaming. It is like having a mini LG OLED big screen on your desk.

As you realize, a Google/Android based tablet will not run PC/Windows based programs which are used for audio streaming or speaker testing applications. A Surface tablet is a nice solution but an expensive platform for these needs. Several PC laptop makers have computers that can do exactly what you need at more reasonable cost. For my needs I like Intel Core i5 or i7 based units. I have seen i5 laptops as low as $350. With the Black Friday sales in a few days, PC laptop deals are available.

                        Good luck.

My opinion, go for an out of lease win 7 machine with office 2007/2010 and keep the wifi turned off. The other option is to load Oracle virtual box with win 7 and older office on a new machine. I know there is win PCD and others, but sometimes I need to go back to PCD / response modeller etc.

Virtual box can keep the virtual machine on a thumb drive. So I can use it on my work laptop and don't have to away from speaker tools while travelling and don't need to carry multiple devices at the same time keep everything nicely segregated.

Why turn turn the wifi off?
