  • Port too close to inside of baffle (or inside back)?

When installing your port, no matter the length, is there a certain distance you need to keep it from the baffle on the inside (or the inside back if installed in the front)? I'm concerned if its too close to the front or back on the inside, then it won't produce the frequency you wanted to tune the box to. Is there a general rule of thumb for the distance from the inside front or back? 1/4 inch? 1/2 inch? 1 inch? Any thoughts or input are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Two times the port diameter is a general rule of thumb. So a 2" diameter port should have its inside end at least 4" from the nearest boundary wall.

Ive always tried to maintain at least the port diameter away and it doesnt seem to have effected the tuning or increased turbulence as long as the port is flared. Same goes for slot ports.

Me too. I've also always thought the general rule for the distance between a port and the inside wall was the diameter of the port. So if the ports 2 inches, leave at least 2 inches for the port.

Thanks everyone! Exactly what I was looking to find out. Follow up question...

Do we know why this is considered the general rule of thumb? Or maybe its some complicated math equation we don't want to get into? Ha.

The ROT is to keep turbulunce at the end of the port as low as possible and maintain the port tuning.

If you MUST, you can cheat a little on the 2X port diameter, but the port tuning may change and clarity of low frequencies may suffer.
