Back in the olden days, active crossovers were made using these things called "op-amps". For an example, have a look at the Linkwitz Orion.

So why is that bad compared to "DSP", all most DSP does is the XO, very few actually implement room correction and even it they do it won't match with the MWAF room. DSP can do a lot of fancy stuff, but mostly goes un-utlized....! so go for it.

I hosted Iowa DIY in 2004 & 2006 and had similar rules for active or "unlimited" systems. The rule of thumb was, if you can't set up the speakers in 5 minutes, it probably should be in the unlimited class. DSP's as active crossovers still require amps for each channel. So, a 2-way, needs 2 amps, a 3 way requires 3 amps and so on. 5 channel amps have made this much easier but there's still lots of cabling involved. We ran the Unlimited class at the end of the show since we only had the event one day.

Interesting. There's certainly some active plate amps from Hypex, MiniDSP, and maybe even Dayton in the future that can certainly simplify the setup time to be perhaps even more plug and play than a passive speaker.

I would have expected that if I brought my Bamboozled project to WMAF that it would be entered in the unlimited category simply because it is an active system, but I wouldn't have spent more than 5 minutes setting it up.

I could't stay for long for the after party, but Javad thanks for setting it up and the speakers which made it there. Always fun to hand out in a casual atmosphere and listing to music and speakers....!

Brian, always an issue - I had made several versions of my crossover to add in another 2-3 db of bsc based on feedback from SD, but decided to go with the original one as I felt it missed out on some of the "magic", though the measurements were very similar, the music sounded dull and flat. The XO which I had was for placing the speakers on a desk about 9-12 inched from the back wall and it sounds very full, but out in the middle of the room, the bass is a bit thin. But in the big room, it didn't sound too bad, so it's good i guess.

Any other feedback on the MCM MTM would be appreciated. These were the MTM with aluminium woofers on a white baffle.

Although your speakers were quite conventional in their design, I thought they sounded fantastic. I had you second in the Under $200 class. Great job.
