  • Semi OT: Makin' DIY look good

So, I happened across a review of the Alta Audio "IO" loudspeakers tonight. They sell for $3500 for the pair and get a phenomenal review:

Correct me if I'm wrong, though - Aren't those drivers a Fountek Neo X 2.0 and an RS180? That's what you call markup ;).

Correction - it might be the Neo x 1.0.
    DARPA Jr - 2015 InDIYana Winner - RS180-8 + RS100P-8 + ND25FA
    The Aria's - RS150-4 (or RS150-8) + XT25SC90
    The Mariposa's - TEBM65C20F-8 + ND16FA
    The Canzonetta's - RS100P-8 and ND16FA
AudioSource AMP-100 Mods OR Pyle PAMP1000 Mods

They probably would not have scored well in the originality category at MWAF

Someone slipped with the router when they made that cabinet. I've nothing better to say as I'm clearly not the target market for this sort of thing. Am I crazy to want to compare it side by side with an Emotiva B1 at $300?

Sure, from a guy who doesn't own an OmniMic, and wouldn't know how to use one anyway. The line between review and advertisement isn't blurred, it's been erased.

It wouldn't be in one's interest to praise commercial products - IF one makes money selling plans.
A reason for DIY is cost reduction - Sweat equity and no business overhead

                  Indeed.
Advertising involves hyperbole and often fantasy.

If something is more expensive, then it has to be better. If an actor or pop singer endorses it, it has to be better. If the ad convinces you that you'll get "ahead of the Jones" by buying the product, it has to be better. I doubt there is a single product (excluding prescription medical devices and pharmaceuticals) that is advertised based solely on its real attributes. For instance, a few years ago beer cans with an extra hole in the top that could be opened with the end of a key, or something similar, were brought to the market. Opening that hole allowed the beer to be poured more easily without splashing, but the very same could be accomplished without the extra breathing hole by simply pouring it more slowly, especially at first. Of course, with this "greatly improved" beer can, every one had so much more fun at beach parties, etc., and the beer tasted so much better!

That would fall under the category of Fantasy
