  • Into the fray/value build suggestion for fish'n buddy

Was making room in the freezer so I needed to get rid of some fish fillets. A fish'n buddy from work hadn't been having much luck, so he came by for a couple bags of fillets. As we were scouting for new fish'n spots on google Earth, Spotify finished loading in the background (we're really starved for data out here in the sticks) , and the PicoNeo's that flanked the laptop sprang to life.

Is all that sound coming from those? He couldn't believe there were only two speakers making all that bass and the sounds were emanating from places other than the speakers.

One thing led to another and he had a listen to the 'not a Khanspire build'. His words, " I've never heard speakers do anything like this ... ever. I didn't even know they could do this."

One more is introduced to the fray.

Skip forward a few days later at work when I chastise him yet again about not wearing hearing protection. So we made a deal. If he'll keep wearing his hearing protection, I'll build him some speakers.

So now I'm looking for an idea on a very affordable, preferably floorstander, that'll pull off the tricks of the more expensive stuff. His tastes will probably lean towards country/rock, it will need to mate with cheap electronics, and for the most part, be full range.

Built a set of the OS towers, and they would be ok for this purpose, but would like to do something a little different this time. Counting drivers and crossover parts, the OS towers cost ~$200, I'd like to stay under that if possible.

You could build a C-Note pair into a tower cabinet and repurpose the bookshelf flat pack as an option.

Me too! Heard em at InDIYana and couldn't believe the sound he got for so little money!

I think any of Paul C's floor standers would be worth a look too!

Good luck and have fun! Mark

It seems it's cheaper to buy the C-Note kit w/flat pack than the driver and crossover parts only. Go figure ...

Ok, I'm not so good at searching; link to the iguanas please.

Classix 2.5 looks to be about $110 for drivers and a bit more than that for crossover parts so ~$225. Can a non-polarized cap be used for the 100uf with no ill effect? If so, that cuts ~$50 from the build.

Is it possible to build a good sounding floorstander for under 2bills?

Definitely go with NPE caps for the 100uf. You could probably go with NPE caps for the 12uf as well. I'd keep all the caps poly for the tweeters.

I can't find any build links or build info but I think these are the speakers. GRS+Beston

Just to throw another value option in the mix. About $100 In drivers and $25ish in crossover.

All 3 of those; Misfits, Iguanas, or Classic 2.5; will suffice.
                      Good choices!

It looks like the carritas for $88 is available again? They do not have the bass or the sound stage of the classix but they sound good.

I just checked, still says 0 in stock. If you try putting them in your cart, you get an out of stock message.

                              Doing some parts figuring.

Of course the TriTrix kit is $149.80 but out of stock.

The MisFits look to be ~$154.

The Classix ~$175 using np caps in the woofer section.

And I've not be able to find info on the Iguana.

Won't start on these until boy goes back to college in a couple weeks, (keeps my mind busy so the house doesn't seem so empty), so I've some time to decide. My guess is they're going to get played loud which leads me away from the small single drivers and toward the TriTrix or Classix.
