  • Boom box help

IÂ’m interested in building a boom box for my daughter for her birthday. IÂ’m thinking of using Paul CarmodyÂ’s Sprite design, but she doesnÂ’t currently have an iPhone, iPod, or any other type of portable audio player. While itÂ’s important for the future for it to have Bluetooth connectivity, I also want to include an fm tuner. IÂ’ve seen the lepai with the tuner included, but the reviews arenÂ’t great on the tuner section. Is there a a small class t amp and a tuner module that I should consider? I donÂ’t necessarily know my budget. Maybe $50? I could go more for the right products (IÂ’m thinking a separate fm tuner might be the way to go, just not sure where to look). Thanks in advance.

Seth,,,,,,, don't know how old your daughter is, but these days,,,,,,,, buy her a phone. Use one of the Sure amps with Bluetooth and be done!

Use Jeffs preamp, and this amp: https://www.parts-express.com/tda749...2x50w--320-606 And you'll have enough output to be happy. For 4 ohm speakers, use around a 16v ps. The amp is really good for the price. I'm working on a similar project right now.

Crap sorry i didnt play my boombox design at the grandrapids event. The amp is cool but hard to find now. I did find a pretty stout 2.1 channel amp im happy with with just aux for $25 on amazon bare board. I had the sprite there too i was gonna sell it pretty cheap. I should have brouht it in but it was all guys that build their own stuff so i didnt bother.

Can you just wire in an aux input?

If she has a radio or MP3 player, she can just plug it in.

You can get a cost effective, used, Android phone on eBay - Samsung Galaxy S3 for $50 - $75. It doesn't have to be activated. I use an old smart phone as my mp3 player with all the radios (cell, BT and WiFi) turned off. Then the battery life is exceptional. She could load up mp3s or stream via WiFi. I believe there is an FM app (via WiFI) as well. If you get a phone that matches your current carrier's technology, you won't have to buy another in the future. Of course, having the actual phone in her hand may elicit pleas to activate ...
