New Dayton 2.1 Mini Amplifier

Just saw this today...

...looks like it has a lot of the features we've been hoping for. Real power for a decent subwoofer, and bluetooth to boot.
No mention of the crossover frequency or slope, but hopefully it's not super high. A step in the right direction.

May have to pick one up just to check it out.

I have a question in regarding the crossover slope/frequency and if there is a high-pass on the main 2 channel amp. That info is missing from the instruction sheet.

Saw the exact same thing, opened the PDF to see if it was in there... nothing. That's critical info IMO, though probably not for the average Joe. Someone's probably going to have to get one and test it.

The spec.'s scream TPA3116 based 2.1 BT module inside. There are a few variations of the basic design you can see on eBay or AliExpress - with or without a case..

So the questions are ... Did they QC the design and / or the mfg? Is it really a "tone" control or simply a L-R volume control (as in the basic designs see from China)? What is the amp rating on the PS? Enough to carry the transient peaks vis-a-vis the internal bypass capacitor value(s)? Id the front power switch really power on/off or standby on/off. Most, if not all of the existing designs avoid turn on/off pop via a standby switch. If a standby on/off, the unit is drawing minimal power with the amp chips in standby.

I've looked at the same sort of thing on eBay for quite some time. Always difficult to find details about crossover frequency and slope. And when you contact the seller, you're always left with a little doubt that they're giving you correct information.

So I figured, "some day PE will carry a similar item and get all the details and they'll be right."

I trust they will, but maybe it will take some more time.

Yes- %THD at power rating, xover freq, Q, and slope for all 3 channels if applicable; are important details.
Looks like something a majority of us have been wanting though! It could power a Bluetooth boombox, a soundbar with internal subwoofers (though it might still need an optical DAC), a desktop system, or even a small bedroom 2.1ch system.

EDIT: Standby or off is also good to know.... I'm with Mike there.

This kinda fits that bill and includes the subwoofer amp internal. That said... Ultimately I've got a 15" ultimax (...did not think that word choice through while typing... )

That will need some power. It's gonna take a wee bit more than this little amp will dish out! Very interested to see more details.

With a 24 V PS, you will get ~69 W rms at 4 ohms before clipping sets in. If it is the TPA3116, THD should be peak at 0.3% at maximum power (not withstanding any distortion introduced by the op amp circuits).

Oh, and don;t forget, the TPA3116 chip supports several gain settings via resistors on the PCB. Most all implementations are set to 26 dB gain (20x). On the aux input with no other gain coming from op amp circuitry, the L-R channels will not reach full power with a typical phone / mp3 player headphone output. And it remains to be seen whether the BT section supplies additional gain as well.

Nuts. I hope you're wrong, but I doubt it.

If that is the case I can't help but wonder why the original manufacturer don't 'do it right' the first time since it seems like it's not really any harder to do so. I know Mike's pretty much a genius with this stuff, but if he can reverse engineer these types of items to work properly, why can't the original designers?

Well, I look forward to seeing what they're made of and how they function at any rate. Maybe it can be 'tinkered with' to work properly if there are issues. I like the form factor and price a LOT. This could be built into any number of boom-box/table radio types of things and you'd really have a small but powerful source for good sound.

Nope, I'm crazy like that too. You know how it is... sometimes there's cool stuff buried in PE's website that doesn't show up upon a quick glance.
