  • A good tweeter to match 5" SB Acoustics Magnesium Woofers

I bough myself a pair of 5 " SB Acoustics magnesium woofers for Christmas. What would be a good tweeter that is less than $100 to match these woofers? The RS-28A would probably have been my first choice but is NLA. The Seas H1212 would probably work but the grid is ugly to match these nice looking woofers. I will probably cross these woofers at 80 hz to a sub, so they will be sealed.

With a 5” your options seem pretty open, but how about the SB ring radiator? About the same price as the H1212 and can cross low like it too.

How about the one of the medium sized Dayton AMT units?

Unless you are looking specially for a metal tweeter?

When did SB start making magnesium drivers? What is the model #? All the SB tweeters I have tried where great!

The SB26STCN small format (about 2.85 in flange) neo tweeter should mate very well with the 5 in woofer. Jeff Bagby used the STCN in his SB based Sopranos, crossed at about 1700 Hz. Here's the write-up.

Thanks folks. I mean ceramic on my post and not Magnesium.

Hiow about the Neo CD 1.0 now on sale for $44. Great value at that price.

I agree with Ed. I used this tweeter in my Jonquils project and loved it!

I personally think the Sopranos design pushes that tweeter a little low. Although the designer has plenty of great
                designs to choose from.

have you ever listened to these ? or can you tell how a speaker sounds just by looking at the crossover and charts. if so you are the first human being to be able to do so. this speaker actually sounds pretty good.

Just guessing looking at the filter the tweeter would be struggling with the low high-pass frequency and the resistor "pad"
tilting the transfer function might not help much. I could be wrong I am a arrogant prick.

The transfer functions shows a relatively safe HPF around 2500hz and a resistor pad attenuates the tweeter, thus reducing strain on the tweeter. A shunt resistor isnt necessarily required. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk

You realize you are poking at one of the most revered DIY designers, correct? He could make a mistake, he is....somewhat human.....
                        Builds - C-Killa - Speedsters - LithMTM - Talking Sticks - Pocket Rockets - Khanspires - Dayton RS Center - RS225/28A - Kairos - Adelphos - SEOS TD12X - Dayton 8 - Needles - 871S - eD6c - Overnight Sensations - Tritrix (ported) - Lineup F4 - Stentorians - The Cheapies - Tub Thumpers - Barbells - Tuba HT - Numerous subwoofers - probably missing a few...... :p

So do it. More than a few of us have heard the soprano, and many of us have used them in our own designs as well. I've crossed it as low as 1700 and had no issues with distortion or otherwise.
