  • AKAI ST-300 Rebuild

I picked up a pair of Akai ST-300 for $40 bucks but unfortunately the crossover capacitors need to be replaced and one tweeter is fried.

I am looking for advice on where to buy replacement capacitors and a comparable tweeter. The tweeter is an 8 ohm DT-40T which seems to have gone the way of the dodo.

I have attached a schematic for the crossover circuit. Note: The 8 ohm resistors upstream from the tweeter and the mid are actually 8 ohm pots with the positive of the driver tied to the middle post (I didn't know how to depict this in Vituix).

I have also attached a photo of the specification plate from the back of the speaker.

Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Fairly high parts-count XO (for the day).
Dayton's 275-070 "Silky" is an inexpensive 8ohm dome that'll probably work OK in there. Replace both tweets, of course.
The (cheap, like < $1 ea.) npe caps PE sells will be the ones you want in there.
I've never seen the need for a Zobel on a woofer in a 3-way before. Just sayin'. (You could probably "open" that circuit from ground . . . if it makes no diff., don't bother w/a new 33uF cap, just leave it open?)

Woofers OK? Are the surrounds cloth (seems like they'd be foam - the kind that rots, if they're acoustic suspension)?

        Hey Chris,

Thanks for the info. I'll likely go with the Dayton's.

Yes the foam in the woofers are good. I'll take a look at the difference of removing the Zobel on the woofer.

        Cheers,

        Kevin
