  • Hey Designers, any favorite designs?

The whole thing with Jeff Bagsby leaving speaker building had me thinking. Every builder has a "sound" or "aim" that they want...also, a baby that they're proud of.

As a hack kit builder, I just appreciate that there's people before me making great designs.

I'd like to create a short list of future projects where I can pour out my soul and pay homage to the designer by executing it the very best that I can.

    What design you're proudest of?
What do you aim for in your speaker designs?
How do you want to be remembered?

And Jeff, I would love to hear from you even if you have quit this hobby. I love my Quarks, and hope to build one more Jeff Bagsby design someday.

As for Wolf, he's on my list too...for being a really cool guy. I would happily buy him a beer.

And Paul, definitely doing his Isetta. Need to start his guitar.

As for everyone else, who knows? Maybe a Scott Sehlin design is down my alley, or Mariposas?

Just info, it's 'Bagby'. He has a long list...

As for me, I don't drink alcohol, but the thought is nice that you would offer one up!
Unfortunately, my Attitudes have an NLA mid. Cecropia Supreme TLabs tweeters are NLA. W4-1798S midbasses are NLA, so my Glucinium Amor is out. Vijon design was never public. Ahh, yes- The Nephila would work, as would the Stances and Sophomores; availability is good on all of those projects. Overdrive10, Triumph, and compellurgy8 are viable sub designs.

I am a designer that likes a little more realism if I can get it. I am definitely not in the neutral/sterile camp, and more of the realistic/clean/just shy of lively character. I shoot for flat response in measurements. Brass should sound like brass.

Paul says he has a house curve, so that lesser recordings typically still sound good. If he can offer up his PET, I know that will be a good one, as well as the Amigas, Speedsters, and Carreras.

Scott knows his stuff too. His Rhodium is a great one from him, as well as Indium 7.

    Many to choose from,

Too many damned Scott's in this hobby :P

Just to clarify, the Rhodium and Indium's are not mine.

Edit: Just putting it out there, in case someone got confused. I'm assuming someone may see this and think they were my designs.

I just want to be remembered as 'that crazy guy from Texas that built that wayyy-over-the-top 120-pound monstrosity he calls a music monitor!' Perhaps one day when I actually finish designing and building this thing....

It's really hard to choose because there are things I've really liked about all my builds for one reason or another. If I was to pick only one that I could ever listen to again, it would be the Juggernauts. They have the deepest bass extension and lowest distortion of any speaker I've built and the tweeter is simply amazing. I think it's probably the nicest looking cabinet I've done so far as well.

However, I really like the Boomsticks because of what they do in their small footprint. I really like the Silverbacks because they have deep bass and tons of output and the total drivers and crossover cost came in under $225. I obviously really like our CSS kits. I'm a big fan of our LD22 tweeter and it sounds great in all three. The Criton 2TD has really low distortion and some high output for a bookshelf. The P215 form factor is so small yet it sounds like a much larger speaker.

Best in the end would depend on what you are looking for. For some people, the Juggernauts would be way too big, so they could never work. For others, the P215 wouldn't have enough output. The point is, there is no perfect speaker, so you have to choose your trade offs.

My goals when I design are usually doing something specific, like using a specific driver, testing out an idea, or hitting a certain frequency in the smallest box possible. After I decide on the goal, then I basically tune all of my speakers the same. I basically shoot for the same sound every time, which is neutral but not dull sounding.

I heard 2 designs from John Hollander this weekend - the BMR-3L and his Unity style horn speaker were both excellent.

OP said Scott Sehlin, so I figured that what I said was good enough.

I've liked almost everything from John Hollander. The horn loaded ND90 array thing was weird, the purple people eaters were an abomination, and the other one with the big woofers I didn't care for. Everything else has been solid, albeit not the average box and slightly more difficult to build.

Ha ha, no Ben is right. The only thing that Ben left out is that all of those projects except for my first horn thing placed at MWAF. I like to build stuff that I like. It's usually pretty eclectic and sometimes they sound good.

How is Jeff Bagby doing? I have not seen any posts about his health in some time. I certainly hope he is recovering and doing OK. I looked on his funding site, but there was not an update.

Navy Guy: If the Juggernauts take up too much room in your house I will be glad to store them in my man cave for the next 5 to 10 years! My wife would certainly prefer the Broomsticks, though! I just hope you have not cranked the Village People and "In the Navy" on those bad boys! I am no designer, but I think speakers are very individual and also relate to the room they are in and the type of music one likes. But there is no one perfect speaker. Kind of like skies or fly rods. There are some great all around skis and fly rods, but in some instances you can really use a more specialized version: powder skis, race skis, park skis, etc. 5 weight all around fly rod vs a specializes 3 weight for smaller waters. So make 3 speakers and love each of them: a 5 or 6 inch two way monitor; a nice 3 way with 7 or 8 inch bass; and maybe a 2.5 way, speaker with ribbon tweeter or line array to fill in the final spot.

Thanks for the kind words Ben. Among my designs, I have to agree with Rhodium and Indium 7 as favorites. Lithium is a solid all around design. I built two pairs and they always seem to be on loan to someone. There are a lot of Helium builds out there and they are good if you need something that small. I think all of my 3 way monitors can still be built (Hafnium, Zirconium, and Argon) The wood cone Argon mid is on sale at a Canadian vendor.
Keep an open mind, but don't let your brain fall out.

Nope- I've never really touched the stuff. Dad and Mom didn't either around me/sis growing up. Mom's Dad's Uncle apparently was a drunk that sponged off the family, so Grandpa was wholeheartedly against it. I see no problem with an occasional glass in moderation for health reasons, or with sipping on a shot for a sore throat. I've never had more than a half glass of wine myself, or about a shot of whiskey in a sitting. I don't like the taste of alcohol, and frankly don't see the point in drinking often or overindulging. But that's just me. Definitely affords more speaker parts buying fewer adult beverages.

I'm no Wolverine... (pic of me showing off my Cecropia Supremes)
