It IS important that you get a good "seal" between the edge of the woofer frame and the baffle (whether your box is sealed or ported - NEITHER one works right if you've got an air leak, and SOMEtimes the leak will be audible - esp. w/more power). Some guys use something like plumber's putty (my dad would call it "monkey s*it"), others use something like thin, self-adhesive foam weather stripping.
