Does Anyone Else Miss The Classic 10” Two ways?

I used to own Dynaco A35 speakers, back in the 70s. I also remember Advents which were 10” two ways. I miss that design. I’ve been mulling over a DIY project using Dayton RS270P-8A woofers along with TymphanyXT35BG-04 tweets. I would build small 1.5 cu ft towers. The crossover at around 2K.

What do do you guys think?

Check this project out. Not your classic 2 way mt, but really cool, and sexy. You could maybe gain some insight on the 270, based on Dynamo's testing, that could help you to decide on viability and tweeter choice for a standard mt. Glenn.

No, personally I do not. The sound of any number of modern speakers I have is much better than the old large woofer 2-ways I had 30-40 years ago. I have heard pretty good speakers in just about every configuration but I think the diy speaker scene is much, much better now than ever before.

I miss the "Idea" and "Nostalgia" of stuff like that, more than the reality, if that makes sense.

The Advents I had were more of an 8" cone in a 10" basket. I built Wolf's "Zingers" using 8" Dayton DVC woofers. I made them in a vintage style. That satisfied my vintage itch. The Madison WI based speaker store has a 10" 2 way Seas design marketed as an updated Dynaco with a minimal crossover and a really expensive tweeter.

Edit: The original Advent woofer was a 10" cone in a 12" basket. Oops. I liked mine. They were fine for vinyl and FM radio.

Seas A26 RE-4, or something like that. Desinged just foe 2 way use. You don't even need to roll the top end off.

I like the sound of the old Dynaco A25s. Not sure they were completely accurate, but very laid back and fun.

While I liked the A25s, I have a mixed reaction to them. They are what I left with my ex-wife when we parted ways, so they remind me of all that bitterness.

With me it was a pristine Singer Featherweight sewing machine in the green color. I'm still pissed off about that.

To the OP. You may never replicate the sound of the Singer Featherweight, but you can certainly DIY your own version of a 10" woofer and (maybe?) 2" tweeter. Or that SEAS A26 that craigk linked above.

My back-burner project will be a 10"-based, depending on final bass driver selection: TMWWWW or TMWWW TMWW) 3-way, hiding in a 10" 2-way's clothing IE: the bass driver's will not be visible from the front. Will only see the 10" midbass and horn loaded AMT on the front, so it will look like a 2-way. Hefty, they will be. ;) So while I don't miss those older speakers mentioned because I wasn't around when they were prevalent, I can see where their appeal comes in.

Ive been looking for the answer / words ,diagnoses for years . i could not afford a silver face monster receiver when they were new , bought a Pioneer SX-1080 a few years ago that was like brand new ,after receiving it ,i did not get that warm fuzzy feeling that i was expecting . i learned that it was something i did want ( the idea , Nostalgia ) ,not something that i do want .realizing the difference has saved me a lot of money .whether its audio , hot rods or whatever .the new stuff is better , the old stuff is not as good as we thought . some times its better to look , listen, appreciate and just walk away .

I built one using the 4 ohm version, and a Peerless tweeter. I stopped posting in the thread, but continued working on the x-over. I think it's a good speaker. The revised x-over is now 8 parts. Like all speakers, there's compromises. This one is about as good as my best 6.5" 2-ways on most music, and can play louder while remaining a tad cleaner. If I'd built it as a tower, the bass could go very deep, but would be too much for the room I have it in.

May be just what you are looking for. You could drop in an Audax large tweeter (see diyaudio) for a much cheaper top end.

I am not sure how long it has been for you but, for me, whatever I had to leave with my ex-wife was worth it, because it meant I was getting away from her. I hope you see it that way, if not now - then eventually. Whatever I lost, I gained much, much more.
