You are experiencing the unique sound of open baffle speakers and the dipole response. While bass is greatly reduced, so are room modes as you are no longer pressurizing the room like a monopole does.

the perceived response is closer to the old fashioned Fc ~ 380 / bafflewidth
than taking into account the dips and peaks . The ' comb filtering ' is pretty
much masked in other than an anechoic situation .
