You are experiencing the unique sound of open baffle speakers and the dipole response. While bass is greatly reduced, so are room modes as you are no longer pressurizing the room like a monopole does.
Augment that thing with a 21" woofer and you'd likely hear some decent bass without too much EQ.

I know of that which you speak .
A 21 " would be a little much for " desktop " though
Even this 12 " is iffy ( aesthetically ) .
6 " x 9 " or 8 " is O.K. , but pushing it ( excursion wise )

Lack of bass is one issue, but how do you deal with the dipole peak.? (Reinforcement of front and back waves at a particular frequency.....)

In a real room ....... ( walls , corners , furniture, drapes , et . al . )
the perceived response is closer to the old fashioned Fc ~ 380 / bafflewidth
than taking into account the dips and peaks . The ' comb filtering ' is pretty
much masked in other than an anechoic situation .
