    I haven't really followed the F.A.S.T. threads, but I've heard mention of them.

    The W5-1138 is for a Bluetooth 2.1 system with the LY302F and OT19. Having and including the LY302F in my testing though gives me the luxury of comparing my results to Faleppa's so that I can potentially see how my drivers stack up to his tests. I'm really just testing all the drivers I have on hand as I go through this learning process.

    I thought the 55-5655 was a 4" driver..... I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with it.
    The best I can make out, it tests similarly to the RS150 above 300 Hz. My bass HD plots looks high, and I'm wondering if my test baffle set up is contributing, or if I'm still down low on the learning curve.
    It also shares similarities to Zaph's driver in the way the HD trends, although not even close to as good (the comparison is natural since they share the same basket and phase plug by the looks of things). That big magnet he put on his definitely makes a difference. I know he also has proprietary and strategically placed copper in his.

    This is all in pursuit in selecting a mid-range for my other project, the details of which I won't get into here.

    A 3" driver would be ideal, but most of even the best suggest a crossover point of 500 Hz to 750 Hz as you turn up the level.
    Most 4" drivers could accommodate a lower crossover point, but a lot of them have a characteristic rising 3rd HD that makes them more suitable for lower crossover points to the tweeter, whereas the 3" drivers really allow you to cross as high as you're willing to make your vertical lobe narrow.

    I'm really hoping that the LY401F measures as well as the LY302F, but allows for a lower crossover point given the HD expectations.

    Because I think it's funny, here is the W5-1138SMF on a 20" wide x 17" tall baffle, located 5" from the bottom & centered hitting LR2 slopes at 2350 Hz with no crossover.

    How's that for a low component count?!
    HD plots certainly make it look doable. This is not my plan, but it's funny nonetheless.
    Didn't someone enter a 2-way build with the 6" version in one of the contests?

    Driver Testing

    I'd title this 3" and 4" driver testing, but the MCM 55-5655 which is advertised as a 4" Woofer uses the same 5.42" frame as the Zaph Audio ZA14W08.
    Silly me for not checking this measurement before buying it.

    I have a couple projects in the planning phase that require a 3" or 4" driver.
    I leaned heavily on Timothy Felepa's site which is fantastic, in conjunction with Zaph's and HiFiCompass's data as well to evaluate candidates.
    Ultimately though there were some drivers out there that hadn't been tested that I was curious about.

    While I'm at it, I'll be testing the MCM, running the W5-1138SMF through the paces, and duplicating Felepa's test of the LY302F.

    I'm trying my hand at the same techniques and measurement setups used by Felepa, Zaph, and HiFi and maybe they'll be close enough that cross-comparisons can be made.

    The test baffle is 48" x 48" which should be good to between 500 Hz - 600 Hz.

    Each driver was broken in with a 15 Hz sine wave for an hour at a level that moved the cone to what looked like close to xmax.
    The Dayton PC105-8 and PC83-8 got very warm during this test, registering up to 166 deg. F in the pole piece.
    The LY401F was really the only one that didn't get too warm. It only got up to around 95 deg. F.

    I plan to test some more drivers in this same fashion later, but these are what I'm starting with.

    Measurements to come.
