I'd say the Dynavox graph is smoothed to no more than half the resolution of the Visaton graph, which appears to be 1/24 or even 1/48 octave. You can measure with 1 octave smoothing and get a result as flat as a pool table. If it looks too good to be true...
The phase plug seems to really smooth out the high end of the whizzer cone.
That's not a phase plug. It's a pole piece extension, which looks like a phase plug, but isn't, no matter what they call it. There's no dust cover over the pole piece, so rather than leave that space empty they put an extension on it. They say it's aluminum, so it would have some heat sinking benefit, but it's not like a 20w driver needs pole piece heat sinking. All in all, it's a cosmetic feature. In any event I wouldn't be concerned about response above 12kHz when the source is FM.

Good call Bill. Which is preferable?

I wouldn't say one is better than the other, especially when you consider that your ears only resolve to about 1/6 octave.

A page back Mr. Lee suggested I hook up the satellite KHL speaker to a better reciever. The speaker sounded much better, leading to the conclusion that the KLH amp was the prob, not the KLH speakers.
But then I hooked up a better computer speaker (Cambridge Soundworks) to the KLH, and that was a big improvement over the stock speaker.
So I bought two Dynavox LY401F drop-ins (the LY301 won a small internet comparo).
And the radio really does sound nice now. Much better than my old Sangean. That phatt boom that can afflict certain talk hosts is gone. The music is much improved &... very pleasant!

          Thanks to All, Murf
