Going with a kit/well published design is a smart move. I've been building speakers off and on for over 20 years based on published designs. I was very happy with all of them except for one...the one I tried designing on my own. It was a very expensive lesson. Im sticking to what I enjoy and know best which is the woodworking process. You can still add your personal touches to a kit like using different veneers or painting them to your tastes.
