I'm looking for a project that will fit my needs. First off, I'm using a 10watt tube amp. So I'll need somewhat sensitive speakers. My room is 19ft x 23ft with 10ft ceiling. I listen to a variety of music, from jazz to heavy metal. My setup is all from the 70s except the amp. My speakers are a little old and tired, and I figured there should be something better after 45yrs. I have a budget of $500. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

High sensitivity for your low power amplifier will tend to mean large cabinets and large cone areas. Is something like the Econowave 2 way speakers acceptable in size? A more domestically friendly package might be a 2.5 way tower using 4 midwoofers and a tweeter but that might push the budget a bit. Thoughts?

If you are good with the size, you should check out the Asathor JBL clone project. Price is in your budget, and will work with your amp. It's along the lines of what Andy suggested. The parts sourcing may be an issue depending on where you live. Glenn.

My amp doesn't have any taps, but it does say it can handle 4-8Ohms. I have tons of wood working tools so I don't need a flat pack or anything. Just a schematic and parts list.

The Uluwatu are rated at 6 ohms, according to Mr Campbell's web page (referenced above), so you should be fine there.
Depending on where you purchase the parts, the SB13s may be the traditional round shape rather than the 'square-ish' drivers shown on Curt's web page: this is because SB has discontinued the old shape. This is good news as they will be much easier to flush mount.

Curt's Singularities might be worth a look. They should be very tube friendly. I have some speakers based on the PM220 that I like a lot. The PS220 adds a whizzer cone for brighter highs. They are a good example of a modern driver.

I had a pair of those, nice with the usual sweet spot. I'm not sure if they would handle heavy metal. They do have an impedance flattening circuit for tube amps. I guess if you only have 10 watts they are a choice. Pretty simple to build, a big (BIG) tower with a vent and stuffing, simple filter.
I would have liked to hear them with my Amp Camp Amp(s), but they are gone.

The Mark Audio drivers are well reviewed. The Dayton PS220-8 as used in the Singularity design is about 5db more sensitive for $20 ea cheaper. The kit breakdown at KJF Audio does not show any filter components. May not need any. Some people think that's the best way. I'd go with Curt Campbell myself. That's the bias you'll see here, other forums have different cultures. I may have missed something in my ten minute research.
Edit: The Mark Audio drivers have some rather stringent care instructions. See on the Madison, WI based speaker source.
