  • Woofer To Go With LD22 Tweeter

I just updated the tweeter on my main speakers so now I have a couple CSS Audio LD22 tweeters lying around. I think I want to use them to build some bookshelves that will fit in the PE mini bookshelf knock down cabs, they're .23 cubic feet. I'm trying to go easy to build and easy on the budget so I'm thinking drivers around $40 each. The real rub is I have no clue how to design the crossover so drivers that are also easy to work with would be nice. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions when I get to that point. I'm not 100% what they will be used for.. maybe computer speakers. Any recommendations are much appreciated.

That's a nice tweeter. I have a pair currently used with a buyout Peerless 6.5" woofer. My intention is to try these with some other woofers that I own, however, the current combination is very good.

I use a subwoofer, so the boxes are small, and sealed. I can swap in this woofer to my existing boxes. I think a while back I determined that the same xo worked for both drivers, but likely would need a little tweaking. Curent design is pretty much full BSC, as they are on stands well out into the room.

I have also been tempted to try them with this woofer.

Peerless by Tymphany 830991 5-1/4" GFC Cone HDS WooferThe Peerless High Definition Sound (HDS) Series offers high-quality solutions for multi-way speaker systems employing vented box alignments. A powerful ferrite magnet system is coupled to a finite element analysis-designed suspension system, containing a linear spider design and rubber surround. The motor incorporates an aluminum shorting ring that reduces coil inductance, extending frequency response performance and reducing second harmonic distortion. A cast aluminum basket provides high structural rigidity, heat-sinking capacity for the motor, and additional ventilation under the spider that in combination with a vented cone neck reduces air compression effects. The Glass-Fibre Composite (GFC) cone offers a unique acoustic and visual experience.

It really is a solid tweeter. Looks like the 6.5" is out of stock, but the 5.25" might fit the bill. Do you have a build thread? Thanks!

RS150p is on sale (but on backorder). Based on PE recommendations doesn't look like it goes a low as the Peerless but may work better in the small cabinet.

Always a fan of RS drivers but I have a few scattered through the house already.. I'd like to try something different.

No build threads. I really like the 5.25" GFC driver. I suspect it would work well with the Css tweeter, but I've not used them together.

Do you plan to use a sub with them?

No plans for a sub, but who knows.. I do have a sub problem. These will likely be for light music at my desk or background music in the bedroom.. maybe I'll shift gears and build a bluetooth boombox.

I am a big fan of the SB Acoustics SB12 PFCR 25 -4. In a 5.5L box it has an F3 of 52 and a max SPL of 98db. The TCP115, which is an amazing driver, in the same volume box has an F3 of 48 and a max SPL of 95db. The difference is that, to my ears, the SB has better resolution and less distortion. They are both excellent, and the TCP115 is dirt cheap, but the SB is also very affordable.

Some other ideas, you may have seen:

I am planning to build a small 2 Way bookshelf for my sister. I already have tweeters I would like to use, Css LD22, they can be crossed over as low as 2.5kHz. These won't be used for critical listening so more of a fun but still reasonable sound is desired. Would like to get extension down...

I saw you did a build using their ceramic drivers with this tweeter, how would you say the two SBs compare? Worth the price increase?

Also do you know of any good builds that use the cheaper SB and a different tweeter? I'm wanting to build a cheap desktop setup for work. The SB12 looks like a great candidate.

I know these are quite a bit more expensive than your $40 budget, but the SB12CAC25-08 are fantastic sounding drivers that would work perfect in your box size and with those sweet tweeters.

They look cool too.. I'm strongly considering it. I may do it later and build something cheaper for work. I've decided my next project will be work speakers. Those might be a little overkill for background music, but then again I'm not sure where else I would put them.

                            They really are great drivers.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.
