Peeless Tweeter BC25SC06-04 Unusable?

So I have a pair of Peerless by Tymphany BC25SC06-04 1" Textile Dome Tweeters sitting around. They are a 4 ohm Tweeter and are 96db sensitive. I was going to use them to make a small 2 way, just for fun. However, they are so sensitive that they need the largest resistor known to man to tame them from sounding too bright. I am new to this hobby but are these tweeters virtually unusable?

By the way, they are a direct replacement in size in a Dayton B652, but see above comments.

This is why we have such things as L-Pads. You can trim 10db off pretty easy with a pair of not so large resistors.

It is a fine tweeter, give it a shot.

They are putting golden earrings on a pig for the Dayton B652 but don't let me discourage you from playing! About a 1.5-1.2 mH coil on the 652's "woofer" and a cap to make a matching Zobel can sound pretty good with the Peerless...then you can up-grade the mid-woofer and the enclosure-yup-I've been there! The hardest thing with the B652's is knowing when to QUIT trying to improve them. Pretty soon, you can have $200 each in them and could have designed and built something from scratch MUCH better or built a kit speaker.

Yes this is certainly true regarding the B652. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I picked up a pair at a yard sale for only $10. I removed the tweeters and actually sold those on eBay for $15 plus shipping. So I am already ahead. I can always take the Peerless tweeters out and use them for something else. But then again, like you say, maybe update the crossover and maybe get that GRS 6PR-8 6-1/2" Poly Cone Rubber Surround Woofer from Parts Express. You know, just for fun.

But there is no FDA or ZMA file or even a graph to trace for those woofers. So I have to ballpark that.

Or I can put them on the curb on trash day.

The Achilles heel on the Dayton speaker is the crappy undersized cabinet.

The GRS poly 6.5" is a perfectly fine woofer. I've done a few designs with it, it is super easy to integrate into a design. I rarely toot my own horn, but do an internet search for "Cabrini Redux".

Follow Johnny's lead on the GRS poly. In a good stiff enclosure (5/8" MDF will do with bracing inside) better than twice the size of the stock B652 (sealed), it starts to perform, and ported it can surprise you. The OEM B652 mid-woofer runs out of gas in a doubled stock-sized enclosure. It will only handle about 5 watts as I remember before over-excursion in the 60Hz range, so the book isn't worth the candle, IMO, even though I tried it. I really miss the days of PE's great buy-outs from Peerless and such mid-woofers.

A great little tweeter. Really like them!

To me, one of the best low cost tweeters. They have a nice clarity, great sensitivity but have to be crossed a "Bit" higher than some tweeters.

Glad to hear the new tweeters are working well.
If you're happy enough with the bass and loudness or aiming to stay affordable while avoiding going to a larger cabinet, making sure the current box is well-sealed/glued at its joints and adding some thin braces from top/bottom and side/side and front/back(between tweeter and woofer if there's space) should help the cabinet without taking away much internal space while keeping the same woofer. Kind of a nice subtle upgrade without changing anything too much.

If you're thinking about swapping the woofer at some point too, the (Peerless?) SDS-135F25CP02-04 looks like it should work well in the B652's tiny cabinet with a port (around 1.5inch diameter X 5inch length...though larger is better if you have room). The woofer is a smaller 5.25" which would need you to make a wood ring or something to mount it, and it costs a bit more at $20-25 but is pretty well-liked....and a smaller woofer will play nicer up into the higher-mids. Should also reach about 10hz deeper or more and about 5db louder.

Thank you. I just looked that up. Yes. It would work well with a cabinet of this size with a port. Nice. I did already add some polyfill and bracing to the B652 cabinet. My wife likes the cabinet because it’s small and less obtrusive. Playing around on PCD indicates it could get by with a simple four-part crossover. Either that or maybe some C Notes. However, I still need to finish up my center channel build and evaluate that before placing another order to Parts Express.

That's a great small format tweeter. I used it in my tall WWMTMWW towers and really liked its detail and low distortion (I crossed at 3000 Hz LR4). The extra high sensitivity is really nice to have so you can tweek the frequency response with the crossover design.

This is what I got with the Peerless tweeter and the GRS 6.5 woofer with a first order on each and an L pad. Woofer SPL is a simulated response from loudspeakerdatabase.com. I may have to pad the tweeter a bit more to compensate for the baffle step.
