  • DIY Speaker Event in Grand Rapids, MI

Finally got the dates and location locked in for the Meniscus/CSS get-together, Sept. 17th-18th in Grand Rapids Michigan. Details in the following link:

    http://links.meniscusaudio.com/?ref=...JySzxZLJshheMV

No theme this year, but we do have a couple rules to keep things entertaining.

    1. Please bring only designs new to this event since 2019 (2020 was skipped due to Covid)
    2. Each speaker will get 5 min of house music and 5 min of music brought by the designer. Finding new great demo tracks is one of the best parts of these events and we want to encourage people to bring their own demo music instead of choosing to replay someone else's music. In the absence of personal demo tracks, the speaker will be limited to the 5 min of house tracks.
    3. Entrants can bring as many speakers as they want to demo, but we will allow only one entry per person per "round" before moving on to the next "round" so if we run out of time, everyone should have had equal opportunity to demo their speakers. As such, please prioritize multiple entries in order of desire to demo - we will have some method of labeling this at the event.

Can't wait to see you all there and let me know if you have any questions!

    Dan

Since I missed out on InDIYana... Maybe I'll get some speakers done and make it to this one?!?! I'll pencil it in on my calendar, and we'll see how life is going when it gets closer

I'm definitely in for this one! I will for sure bring the PlumDingers speakers I made for my wife since those haven't had an appearance in the DIY circuit yet. If enough folks want I could bring my Party Animals PA speakers and subwoofer setup. That's a big ordeal though just to set up for 5 minutes. Stands, DJ box, wires, etc. If anyone has a real strong desire let me know. I might rent a uhaul trailer to make that happen.

What formats of demo music will work, bring a CD, bring mp3 on thumbdrive, mp3 emailed to hosts ahead of time, others...? I know at InDIYana it needed to be on a CD but I haven't had a CD burner in nearly a decade.

FWIW, Walmart still sells LG portable CD/DVD burners.

Yes, I should have said something more general like Digital File on a thumbdrive.

I'll buy one if needed and I'm sure they're a lot cheaper now than 10 years ago.

CD is guaranteed to work and we'll try to accommodate thumb drive as well.

Penciled in the calendar. No idea if I can make it, and I don't have a new project to share right now, but it would be great to hang out for a bit.

I can't remember if it was InDIYana or Grand Rapids 2019, but I'll have to watch out for the random sales guy in the hotel bar handing out shots to me and KEtheredge87

Yup! That was Grand Rapids 2019. Good Times! Pretty sure JR was there too. Honestly that Grand Rapids trip is one of my best speaker buddy memories so far. Looking forward to the sequel.

I will be there this year. Hope to ship in a pair, as well.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

I'm an indefinite, solid maybe for Saturday at this point.
The plan will be to demo one bookshelf pair, new for 2021:

                      --- RST28F-4/isobarik SD215A-88 tuned to 31Hz
                      --- 900Hz xovers (8th order)
--- Hot swappable bass reflex ports with custom tuned internal traps
--- Custom heavy duty DIY 45 degree angle input jacks
                      --- Multi-layer Crystallac/gloss lacquer finish
                      --- Red horizontal racing stripes
                      --- 37 lbs each

This is a very interesting design ^

37 lbs? (Not going to vibrate off a shelf).

                        What are the exterior dimensions?

Thanks, Steve. Exterior dimensions are 10" W x 15.25" H x 16" D. Here is a link to the complete construction thread, showing the internal trap dimensions as well. I just noticed that I forgot to post my harmonic distortion measurements at 95dB, showing the tweeter distortion levels throughout the 900Hz crossover area. I will have to find this data and post it (if I cannot find it, I will re-run the test). Bill
