  • Zingers concept variant

    Hi Everybody,

I was impressed with Wolf's Zingers at the 2019 InDIYana meet and thought that someday I would build a pair. Well, going through my "inventory" of stashed drivers yesterday I discovered that I had a pair of SD 215A-88DVC drivers. So, I'm half way there, but the Peerless DA25 BG tweeters are out of stock and won't be available any time soon. So, I do have a pair of Peerless XT25 BG60s on hand, which have an even lower Fs and about the same sensitivity and power handling. I know I'll have to work up a different crossover to use them, but I have had some success doing that recently and am ready to give it a shot. My question is, "Are there any reasons why this combination is a poor choice?" Wolf crossed the Zingers at 2K and I'm thinking I could probably cross at 1800 and get something that would sound quite good. I'm wanting to put my mediocre 8 inch Decaware clone build further in the rearview mirror with this project. Thoughts about the prospects for this project would be appreciated.

    Best,
    Jay

I'm not qualified to comment on your tweeters. I did build a pair of Zingers. To me, the bass response and power handling of the DVC subs is the reason to build these. Combined with the reasonable cost for performance.

I have a Zinger kit sitting in a box I need to build...Wolf would be able to give you an opinion on that driver.

In my zonker variation on the zingers, I pushed the xover even lower because I didn't think the SD 215A-88DVC sounded the best at 2k. After all, this driver was initially designed to be used as a subwoofer. I crossed them at 900Hz, 8th order, to an RST28-F. In terms of stress on the tweeter, 900Hz 8th order is roughly equivalent to 1400Hz, 4th order. They seem to be able to handle the power and FR is very flat throughout the xover region. Bill

The Zinger tweeters are in stock at the Michigan speaker supplier that provides Wolf's design kits. ICYMI.

Uh, not sure the XT25BG60 will do the job, but there really is no reason to go lower if the woofer will do 2kHz. When I built the MAX 8" 2-ways, it seemed the XT tweeters had more beaming issues due to directivity problems in transition, so I went with the DX25.

Have fun with it! However- don't round the edges as those are sharp on purpose. It helps with the response of the tweeter approaching the xover point.

Many thanks to everybody. The DX25s are on their way to me. Also, it turns out the DX 25s and XT25s are physically identical, so I'll probably try both just to hear the similarities and differences. The wood is cut for the cabinets and if my plantar fasciitis lets me get into the shop a few hours per day, I should have them in the tuning stage by this time next week.

I didn't use the DX25 in the Zingers. I used them in the MAX.
                The Zingers used the DA25BG08-06.

A little off topic, but I ask this for my own learning. Does something like Classix 2.5 with dual 6.5” DC160s have more output or do the Zingers have more output with 1 single 8”?

talking strictly SPL given how low both the speakers are tuned and go down to in their respective cabinets.

I have built both, and I would there is a slight advantage to the zingers. They seem to handle a bit more power before they start distorting. They have incredible bass. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk

Fortunately, I was wrong in post 7 about what I remembered ordering! The right DA 25s are what are on their way here. Thank goodness...

For anyone else interested, the Grand Rapids spot has about 10 pair of tweeters on hand. However, they are out of woofers for the Zinger project.

These look like they would be a lot of fun; both to build and to listen to.

For some reason I've had an itch to build a speaker with an 8" woofer recently. This may be one to do, once the temperature drops below 100 for awhile.

The Zingers were a VERY fun build for me. I did everything wrong as standards go, and they came out sounding really good.
