  • InDIYana 2023 theme initialization....

To whet appetites of the curious, greet the penny pinchers with allowance, and deal with distribution issues of the current day and age; 2023 criteria/rules will be considerably lax from previous years.

Using one of the 'acceptable flaw' models of a previous event theme poll that was also well approved and highly voted for,
"Tweeter Yoga" will be the next theme! Make sure those domes have watched their fair share of '80s Jane Fonda videos, done their calisthenics, become accomplished at Tai-Chi, been through boot camp, or had Pilates class with a contortionist. Their flexibility will be tested in the design/demo phases for sure.

    Minor rules include:
    - 2-way passive designs only, stand mounts preferred but not required.
    - cabinet volume to be 1.5ft^3 or less.
    - woofer must be an 8-12". Yes, I said 12".
    - no tweeter faceplate must exceed 4.125" diameter or edge to edge.
    - no large waveguides allowed, see faceplate rule.
    - no dollar limits, spend or not!
    - no in-stock, buyout, or NLA driver limits. If you have it on the shelf, the above apply, and wish to use it- PLEASE DO! Use up the stuff you've had sitting.
    - No cabinet over 40 lbs will be hefted for demo by the InDIYana planning crew. If you build heavy, you can set them up! =-)

    Have fun, and good luck!

This is going to be so much fun and I can't wait to see the diversity this brings! 8,10,12" woofs! Yes please! I'm going through my inventory now!

You mention domes in the intro but not in the rules. Do they have to be dome tweeters?

They don't HAVE to be domes. Just so the faceplate does not exceed 4.125".

Great theme, should be interesting. I've got a few ideas already...

They do have to be tweeters though, not widerange or fullranges.

Looks interesting and definitely will stretch crossover and driver choice limits for a lot of builders. I expect to see a lot of Dynaudio A25 / Seas A26 lookalikes!

As usual, I've got some rule stretching questions, multiple tweeters OK? I assume multiple woofers were OK. Dipole tweeters OK?

John- Yes, yes as long as they play the same freq range and it does not become a 3-way or other arrangement, and yes. I don't see why not.

Apparently, Chuck's been asked about coaxials. As long as the integrated waveguide on something like an Eminence is aft/below of the dustcap, then it applies. Something like a B&C with a large plastic front flare is not allowed. If you want to suspend the tweeter in front of the cone, then that is okay too.

I do foresee there being some CAT378, Seas 27 DXT, and Wavecor TW030WA14. Maybe some others exist....

The Wavecor appears to be a 4.5" flange, which I didn't know until I started checking for this challenge. So I assume this is out?

The 14 derivative is smaller than that, but yes- the 4.5" is too large to use. I had entertained the DA32 myself as I have a pair, but they are too large as well.

Your pain is also mine in this quest...

Yeah I had planned the tw030wa05. That combo is so good I may do it anyway outside the challenge. I thought about hiding it behind a baffle waveguide but the faceplate has an integrated chamber.

I think I'm in for this one. The 20/20 was good fun.

What about home-made coaxial, I'm not talking about suspending a tweeter, I'm talking about modifying a driver into a coax. Possibly drilling the pole, phase plug removal, ect. In all honesty the situation I'm asking about doesn't seem fair because you're turning a woofer into a waveguide.

Since Eminence style are allowed, this would be as well. Even though it MIGHT yield an advantage by cone, other issues will rise.
I could say both drivers mounted on the baffle, but I believe it'll stifle creativity in differences, so I'm allowing it. They aren't easy designs by nature of what is involved, and this may just make it worse.😮😁

Depends on which one. The 'Great Heil' is larger than 4" square.

I can't see a coax pro-woofer combo getting low enough to be competitive. Suspending a big 32mm tweeter in front of a decent woofer could be worthwhile.
