  • Triumph subwoofer questions

I'd like to make a pair of Wolf's triumph subwoofers to pair up with some continuum ii speakers I'll be building.
Can anyone point me to a good link that includes build plans? I believe the subs utilize the Tang Band W5-1138SMF 5-1/4 speaker but what passive radiator do they use?

Do the original plans call for a 9 inch exterior dimension cube made with 1/2 mdf? Is bracing necessary for such a small enclosure?

    Any input would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

Tommy lays it out rather cleanly...

9" cube with 0.5" material, 9.5" cube with 0.75" material. I used the 25W plate, but up to about 50W is good. W5-1138 Neo or ferrite model with 2x 830880 5.25" PR and no added mass.

Let me know if you need more info...

Man, what a bummer that those 830880 PR's are now MOQ of 500 pieces

The Peerless PRs are still available at the other two upper midwest/great lakes states parts sources. Today at least.

Edit: Wisconsin out, Michigan took my order. You snooze you lose.

There is always the Biumph design too. The reason I did that one is because the '880 stock have been in a state of flux over the last 12 years. It yields another option. Now that the DSA PRs are out, they may prove better applied than the sd215 paper PR.
I'll noodle a bit, and see what shakes out.

And an update. The Michigan source is out of stock, and refunded my order once they came to their senses. Goodbye Triumph.

Oh well, the design is 16 years old. I'm lucky it lasted that long.
I still plan on a remodel with available PRs for verification. There should be a viable alternative.

If you want to stay with the W5-1138, a 9.5" cube assuming .75 material and a DS215PR with 75g added mass yields an F3/6/10 of about 35/33/30. With 50w of power, it yields 98db with the PR just breaking its Xmax.

My plan is to build 2 (parts are already on hand) and power them with an APA150. With its built in xover and adjustable volume/gain, should be a nice little setup.

That's very close to and uses the same PR as my Biumph design. Since the Triumph was flat to 40Hz, that was the initial target for the Biumph. More mass droops the start of the rolloff so I kept that amount lower, IIRC. It even mentions the last time the PRs were discontinued below...

I just verified, Biumph uses 26g added mass.

It is indeed. I'm hoping iny large space a single enclosure will be sufficient.

I had indeed hoped to do a pair of cheaper alternatives.

To the OP, please post pictures of your project.

With the loss of the Peerless PRs, I looked at Tom Z's Epique subs, but decided too expensive and overqualified for the bedroom 2.1. I ended up ordering one 8" PR and going with Wolf's "Biumph". I have the little Tang Band driver in DanP's NRNP sub. This sub is cute and very small but doesn't. fully utilize the TB's abilities. Got away cheap this time.

Will do. Did some cutting today and started assembly of the box. Also made the recess for the amplifier. The 300d amp is currently backordered for a month or so so I'm trying to decide if I want to wait or go in another direction.

Thanks. They were on sale recently so I splurged. I sure do like the Jorgensens.
