  • "sources" for thick real wool felt?

Anyone know places "online" where I can purchase thick real wool felt? I've read how it helps and what it does but I'm only finding the thin stuff, like 4mm. I'd like to experiment with it, even cover an entire baffle just to mess around.

    Thanks

F13 felt at McMaster Carr. Grainger may have it too..
I'm not sure the difference between F11 and F13 for speaker building. Don't get it too thin (1/8" or 1/4"). I think I have 3/8" but I've seen 1/2" recommended.

Not sure where you are located but I order mine from an automotive supplier. It's sold as "Heavy Duty Felt Underlay" and is around 10mm thick and comes in sheets about 36x70 inches. When buying, just make sure it is actually felt and not just some foam underlay.

Here's the stuff I get here in Aus: https://trufitauto.com.au/product/he...nderlay-1-roll
      Constructions: Dayton+SB 2-Way v1 | Dayton+SB 2-Way v2 | Fabios (SB Monitors)

The leading producer and converter of industrial wool felt, S.A.E. grade felt, polyester felt, and die cut felt, with one of the largest felt inventories in North America. The Felt Company also offers felt products for the home and office: laptop sleeves, placemats, and more.

I layer the "high loft wool batting" from the fabric store or have bought from McMaster.

When I use felt for cab damping, because the space is too tight for foam or polyester batting, I use 1/2" carpet underlayment. The best part is that you can get it for free at a carpet store that does installation. They always have scraps that are too small for them to use but still plenty large enough for our purposes. Worst case you may have to dumpster dive for it.

Don't use any felt that is less than 1/2" thick if you want to reduce diffraction. I buy mine from McMaster-Carr.

What is your intended use, box internal or on baffle for diffraction control?

I should have read the original post. Was focused on the source posts.

On that topic, seems to be more available now. At one point I couldn't find much of any of my preferred felt.

I've looked around for wool felt a few times and come up short every time. Anything I find is eye-watering expensive in any decent thickness IMO. But then again I'm a tightwad.

IDK if anything like cork or foam rubber would come anywhere close to felt? Have my doubts
I'm certainly not good at this. Just stubborn enough to keep going.

There are alternatives to Ultra-Touch. I use this stuff: https://www.atsacoustics.com/recycled-cotton-batts.html

Oops, I realised I was going off-topic too much so I changed my post.

At one point only a few years ago I managed to score 6x batts of ultratouch (18"x48"x~1.5") for about $30 shipped. Those days are long gone

                        Thanks for the info though!

No problem. The ATS stuff is nice if you have serious volume to fill. Just slice it into strips etc and it stays in place.

My focus is using the felt on the baffle (the outside). Instead of applying peices here and there, I thought it would be fun to cover the entire baffle with felt. While I understand thicker felt is more affective, I have a question...

Do I make it so the top of the felt is level (flush) with the tweeter face plate? Or, does the felt need to be higher than the face plate? (higher meaning the height of whatever the thickness of the felt is..
thus allowing the reflective frequencys to "soak" into the felt).

The felt should sit on the face of the baffle, so it would be proud of the tweeter face plate by whatever thickness it is.

Here is a link to one of Dave's pages regarding felt for diffraction:

Here is a picture of a project I did using felt on the baffle:
