  • What's With the Pricing of the New TB Woofers?

    4"....... $28.96
    5.25"... $45.86
    6.5".... $51.66

There's a big price jump from the 4" to the 5.25". Is the 4" a really good deal or are the larger drivers overpriced

One thing to consider is that there's a lot more steel in these underhung drivers, and each one has a larger motor than the next smaller driver, so that the volume of steel in the top plate almost doubles with each successive size.

My query has to do with the LARGE jump in price from the 4" to the 5.25" while there is a more reasonable jump from the 5.25" to the 6.5"

Mike my guess is the magnets the 4 inch has a 90mm wide magnet the 5.25 has a 120mm wide magnet and the 6 inch has a 135mm wide magnet. 90 divided by 120 is 75 percent 28 divided by 45 is 62 percent. 120 divided by 135 is 88 percent 45 divided by 51 is 88 percent. so even though it seems that the raise is higher then it should be when comparing magnets it is less out of whack. also the voice coil jumps from 32 to 38 from the 4 to the 5 from the 5 to the 6 the coil stays the same. so between voice coil and magnet it really is not out of whack

one more thing the 5 inch will play to 76hz in a sealed 9 liter box. with a very good hi end roll off. at least the graph says so. this woofer is worth 45 bucks if it can do what it claims to. It would be a nice mtm wired in series for the mcm biamp plate. it can reach 3000hz with ease and a ton of tweeters can cross at that point. a pair of these, a morel mdt 38 tweeter,an mcmplate and the dayton .75 maple mtm cabinet cost about 320 a speaker. It would be a really nice speaker.

...and 50% of the price is the actual cost. Not to mention, they're made in China, so they're about $2 to produce.

But the good ones are worth it, IMO.

Philip... Yes, it would beat the heck out of any commercially available complete speaker at even twice that price point.
