  • Help choosing capacitors for re-cap jobs

I have a Marantz AV9000 pre/pro and Yamaha M-80 amp that I'm replacing the caps in.
The Marantz needs new caps on the secondary side of the power supply board and the Yamaha for the audio portions of the amp. The Marantz has Elna 85c rated caps with the largest cap being 470uf @ 63V. I'm planning on upgrading to 105C as the heat from the voltage regulators heat sinks killed the Elna's.

Nichicon has a huge list of High Reliablity Types here http://www.nichicon.co.jp/english/pr...ini/list_f.htm. Should I get the rated lowest ESR and ripple?

The Yamaha came from the factory with Black gates and Muse caps. Black Gates are too expensive though. Has anyone tried the Nichicon "Muse" caps for audio signals? http://www.nichicon.co.jp/english/pr...ini/list_f.htm

I've also considered Panasonic caps as well for the audio.

    Panasonic FC Series

    TIA

Black Gates are no longer produced, thus the constantly increasing price. Muse are great caps, tons of guys on Head-Fi use them.

I've used the Nichicon FG's & KZ's on recap jobs on my disc player and a vintage Hitachi power amp. The disc player got the caps in the audio section and the Hitachi got caps just about everywhere I could get to 'em, except the big power supply caps however. The results I got have made me a big fan.

why are you replacing the black gates on the yamaha did they go bad? Muse caps are very good by the way. if those black gates went bad you are playing the amp too loud or the speaker load is too low.

Yeah, some of the Black Gates measure very low so while it's open I'm going to replace all of the caps except for the big filter caps. I picked this amp up along with a Yamaha 5 disc cd player and C-60 preamp for a whopping $200.00 for everything in a pawnshop

These amps are getting long in the tooth and tend to run hot especially in auto class a, hence the caps needing to be replaced. BTW, one thing I had to do was to remove the adhesive Yamaha used to secure the pair of 1000uf 100v caps to the pcb. This stuff becomes conductive and was causing the protection circuit to clamp down. Once I cleaned that up it fired right up.

Can you post some pics? We like looking at amps almost as much as we like looking at speakers :D

              Was the 470uf/63v a typo?

Nichicon muse are supposedly good caps; I'm sure they'd work fine for all the smaller values. I usually just use the regular VR series, but i'm not an audiophile. Use regular Nichicon, Dublier, Vishay, whatever you can get cheap for the power supply caps. No fancy cap will make any difference in a normal power supply filtering application. Sounds like you do need 105C degree rated caps there though. Check ApexJr.com for deals.

The Panasonic FC line is nice.

Consider replacing the small electrolytics with film caps - Dayton sells a wide variety.

The service manual for the Marantz shows one cap of that value in the power supply. Yeah, I looked at Steve's website but I'm trying to source them all from one place to save on shipping.

BTW, if anyone needs a copy of the service manual for the Marantz let me know.

                  thanks

Mark, I would love to obtain the AV9000 Service Manual, please! I have a 9000 that unceremoniously shut itself down in the middle of playing 'Once Upon A Time In America'. Very annoying. The power supply caps failed. I took the board out and removed two caps that had heat-shrunk the vinyl sleeves, so I could tell they were cooked. On test, neither of the two big 4700 uf 35V caps would read consistent capacitance. I'm suspecting that the variability had become bad enough to cause the protection circuitry to kick in, is this a reasonable assumption? I can see nothing else amiss, so I've ordered new 105 degree caps. What else should I check?
