  • Amplifier suggestions needed please

I'm getting my HT room close to being able to use it again after it was destroyed by renters cats. I sold most of my amps a couple of years ago, so I'm in need of some new power. In total, I need 8 channels of power, 4 of which are for subs. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get past the Behringer EP2500 for the subs. They have the power I need and can handle the ohm load they'll be faced with, so..........Two of these for only ~$700 seems unbeatable, and the user and critical reviews seem largely positive. Talk me out of it if you can. (and yes, I have dedicated 20 amp circuits for each amp)

The difficult choice seems to be in finding the best amp for the mids and tweeter lines on my line arrays. Again, the Behringer would be the inexpensive option, but I haven't seen many comments regarding their suitability for upper frequencies. The Behringer also has way more power than I need, but I know how to use the volume control so I can deal with that problem. I'm also considering the Emotiva XPA-5 channel amp(5x200w/$800), possibly an NAD T973(7x140w/$1200) or Outlaw 7500(5x200/$1600), a Halo A52(not likely at $2400), or something else entirely. I would like to have balanced inputs, but it's not a deal breaker. The ability to handle 2 ohm loads would be nice. The NAD and Behringer will both do this, and I'm thinking the Emotiva and Outlaw might as well at the output levels these are likely to see (pretty light use). I can rewire for a higher load, and as is I think I'm actually at 3.5ohms, so it's not as bad as it sounds. I just like having as much flexibility as possible to allow for future developments.

The easiest option and the cheapest would be the Behringer. The Emotiva looks good too, but I know little about this amp or company, but it does have balanced inputs. The NAD T973 has 7 channels at 140w for $1200, and will do a 2ohm load.

Any thoughts or suggestions for other amps I should consider?

Seems like you've already answered your own question Todd. In my mind, the extra headroom of the Behr is exactly what you'd want for your arrays. The only downside I see of them for HT use is the fan noise and that is well documented to be easily resolved. Given your situation, that is exactly what I would do. Save the extra amp dough for a new Blueray, some movies, some music, or whatever new gadget you've been eyeing.

Yeah, I guess you can see which way I'm leaning all the way from Charleston. The Behringer does seem like the natural choice. I'm just having a hard time adjusting to the idea of pro amps for mid and high freq. home use, but if there's a flaw to be found with the idea, it isn't in the specs of the Behringer. And you're correct that I do have my eye on a few goodies. 2 TV's need to be replaced, a new pre/pro, and at least 1 new DVD player. This tme next year if the economy is better, you'all can think me because I will have done my part.

Yeah, I've got several NAD amps sitting around myself, but they're all being used for one thing or another. I've always been very pleased with their build quality, SQ, and reliability. That's why I was surprised you traded in the NAD for the MCM amp a couple of weeks ago. How's that working out?

I thought about the Gainclone option too, but I need something a little more robust than I want to build (or have the time to build) right now. Also, I priced out all the parts for a nice gainclone a few months ago, and it is more economical to buy an existing amp at the power levels I'm looking for.

I'm in the process of doing some fully active 2way LCR theater mains myself. I've gone round and round with just about every option I can dig up and keep coming back to a trio of EP2500's to provide the amplification. Just haven't pulled the trigger. I've got one here currently for sub duty so I'm comfortable with it. VERY quiet with the fan mod however it would be nice to have a fanless option. Not sure how the "quiet" fan route will be with 3 more in the rack whirling away. Anyway prior to sub duty I had it bridged to my current center with no issues. The center is horn based of reasonable sensitivity and noise/hiss wasn't an issue assuming gains set correctly.

Regardless of what some people will say the Behringer's are well built and sound fine (as in, they don't have a sound at all). Only downfall for a HT setup is the fan noise but that can be solved as noted before. If you really want something with a little less power than the EP1500 take a look at the Tapco J800

Tapco (Mackie) just another brand making copies of the QSC RMX series and the build quality is the same.

Those Audiosource made MCM amps aren't even in the same class as the QSC clones Phil.

I need fanless due to amp placement. if you can deal with the fan noise your amp looks like the winner.

I can't say enough good about Emotiva. Superb customer service and good quality products. The nice thing about their amps, particularly some of their new offerings, is that you can configure them any way you want. Sounds like an ideal match to your situation.

Thank you. That answers my concern that there would be a hiss problem. It looks like the Behringers are the way to go for me as well.

                          Re: Amplifier suggestions needed please

                          Sigh...

Bogie's Bunker is Dead. Long Live Bogie's Office!

In the Bunker I had two Quatro 15s in a 21hz ported 12 cubic foot box that was on the LFE circuit.

From the mains, I ran that through a Behringer EQ, which had a sub out.

                          So...

I had a 0.9Q sealed Quatro 15 under each of the mains.

Basically, after I got the stuff dialed in, I could both rumble AND thump. And we played pretty loud at times.

Running those four 15" subs, on two channels, each two ohm, was a Behringer EP2500. And it NEVER hiccupped, altho I did get some clipping lights a couple of times on VERY "hit-heavy" material (most notably Live Cream Reunion's Toad, and Pink Floyd's Pulse's One of These Days). And that got fixed with a slight amount of tweaking on a compressor/limiter...

Now for the scary part - Bogie's Office is a 10x16 room... And it's going to have the 4 15s in it... At least for a while.

I plan on going the diy t-amp route. If you have any soldering/electronics skill, check out 41hz.com.

Those cute widdle thingies sound nice for tweets, but I don't think they'd be happy with boatloads of subbage...
