I use rubber hockey pucks used to be 1 dollar each. Now 1.50. I have done spikes not that important with a sub if the box has enough weight to it. also those aperiodic vents work better for sound above 60hz. you can save some money on the red gard. It can always be done later if you pick up air leaks.
Instead of building an "X", I took a whole, solid piece and cut a very large round hole in it. Mounted this in the center of the box with screws and glue. You could even go so far as to add dowels from the inside of the baffle using two (opposite corners) and run them to the center piece or back wall.

im thinking an "X" that can be seen from the speaker cutout, which would brace the baffel into the sides and back, hopefully ridgidafying(who says its not a word?" the whole box. however figuring out where to notch for the driver and amp may be trickey, but o well.

stiffen the box sounds better but your 15 inch title makes it overkill. the x pattern has been done by some. look at sub box builds on google
Something to consider is to build a small, sealed box recessed into the back where the amp will be located on the box. I know the amp is air tight and all, but over time that can fail. Might take up a few small points of internal volume but that shouldn't make any difference. Just a thought because Ive heard people from time to time complain about this issue.
As far as the "X", your ideal should work just fine. I just try to keep in mind the entire box integrity. More than one way to kill a cat.
they are glued and screwed to all four sides of the box. I wrapped the box in pe vinyl
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=261-612 the mdf was 1 inch thick so it was easy to glue and screw to the 4 sides. the back wall is 2 inches thick and the front baffle is 2 inches thick. over kill for 12 inch subs. The front baffle does not flex the back does not flex. the sides do not flex. in your case I would do the 2 inside braces. tie them to the 4 sides. then tie the two baffles with 2 wooden closet rods to each other and to the front and back of the box. it is not hard to do . i will draw a picture on wed. phil
