  • Best Pound-for-Pund DIYer

I may be watching too much UFC, but who's the best pound for pound DIYer?

I'd put Jeff Bagby (FRD Consortium) and John Krutke (Zaph) in the top 2 for their work, but who else rounds out the top 10? (Considering proliferation of designs, woodworking, overall design , etc??)

well, i think we will need to know the weight of the guys. That way we can add thier designs, woodworking ability, ect , and then divide it by their weight, so we can get a lbs vs lbs comparison.

Me for example, 190 lbs, buils a few cool projects, no designs my self, so my lbs ratio would be pretty low. Now if i only weightd 2 lbs, it woulb be much higher ( and i would be a squirrel)

One vote for Dan Neubecker. His design currently graces the cover of the P.E. catalog. His designs are innovative and sound great - as evidenced by the fact that he has been cleaning up top honors at DIY events over the past year or two. His woodworking is as good as it gets, too.

Curt C, top of the list, bar none. It would be shocking to get a tally of the number of Curt C designs built. Tritrix, Triune, Tritrix MT, Uni-CC, Impresario, VHT, HTGuide RS 3-ways, Statements, Mini Statements, Statement Monitors, the list goes on. Then there are all of the people for whom Curt has "whipped up" a quick crossover that aren't even on the list.

Hard to argue with the work of Mr. Neubecker, though. The quality of his wood finishes always leave me a little weepy. :D

I vote wolf for being prolific.

I bet if he won the lottery he'd spend every day devising, modeling and building new speakers.

Biff covered all the guys I've seen post the most on various forums or that I ran into great information on sites by them when getting into DIY.

That's the REAL problem. Even if we could ever come to some sort of a consensus, the honorable mention list would make your head swim.

These guys are my speaker-building heroes. My skills have improved tremendously and a wealth of knowledge has been gained from the generosity of these guys. Also Dave Brown, Dave Tenney...some of my first DIY projects were theirs. I could come up with a few more, if given a few minutes...

I know a guy with some serious woodworking chops who weighed just a hair over 100 pounds. Does that count?

Seriously, though...Sigfried Linkwitz has been designing speakers far longer than I've been alive.

Another one that is well known among DIY types is Greg Monfort. I don't believe that he's on this forum, but he attends quite a few others. A great guy that's been dispensing knowledge for a *long* time and is one of the acknowledged experts of speaker design.

My vote is for Wolf, although I have to admit bias, as I consider him my personal mentor. That said, all of the names mentioned above are beyond reproach, and I'd like to throw Paul K. and Pete Schumacher in the mix as well.

Oh, and there should be an up-and-comer award for Paul Carmody (undefinition), IMHO.

The best... EVERYBODY!!! Diversity is the spice of life... and I've learned from more people than I want to count. My scrapbook and notepad is full of pics and info from many people, many not seen but a few times or very rarely.
Even when I disagree or see different priorities, one still learns something... it's "group participation" that counts... not "group think"!!!
