  • Ashly vs. Behringer Xover for biamp system?

I'm considering either an Ashly XR-2001 or a Behringer CX2310 to biamp a set of subwoofers and Acoustat 1+1's. Any opinions on these products, or any better suggestions? The one thing I like about the Ashly is the variable alignment ("Response" on the front panel), which can provide anything from Butterworth to L-R response (shapes the Q of the filters, I think), while the best thing about the Behringer is the price. Anybody out there used either (or perhaps both) in a SOTA home system (both units are more common in the pro audio arena, but I have not seen any "home audio // Hi Fi" crossovers for a while...). There are also some good home brew designs on the web, but that's a lot of work (& commitment) just to get started--if I used one of these for a while, and wanted to DIY, I can sell the rack unit for almost what I'd pay). Thanks, lads! (and lassies...if there are any out there!) --Bill

I've not listened to any Ashly crossovers. The Behringer crossovers are surprisingly transparent but have a slightly soft top end. Not SOTA but not bad considering their very modest price.

These are worth consideration if you're after the best sound

The CX2310 works fine (I have a CX3400 . . . same circuits, a few extra "features" (the limiters are nice to have, on sale right now at Musicians Friend for $110) and is one of those examples where it is cheaper to buy than to build, unless you need asymetric slopes (depends on the lf rolloff of your "mains") or some other such thing. The "variable Q" feature of the Ashly might be useful (it's a lot more money for "might be") but note that it doesn't effect the slopes . . . the filters are still both fourth order.

The CX2310 is selling for under $70 at the moment . . . (I'd still get the CX3400 though, for the limiters). Kinda hard to beat . . .

The CX2310 is great. Good connectors, oversized transformer, Alps pots, and it uses mainly NJM4580 opamps. You can usually get a sightly used one for ~50$ shipped on ebay.
