Thanks for pointing that out. I probably won't bother after all, I'd really hate to destroy such great vintage speakers.

I could probably make a decent project out of them for use with my Sansui 6060. Maybe a "Quad" setup type thing? The Sansui has outputs for 4 speakers in total. Though, the reciever is rated for 40 watts rms per channel and the EV's are rated for 20 watts rms.

I'll take some pics and post in a little while. If I can't make a good constructive use of them, I'll probably sell them to someone who would give them a good home.

"I'm not planning to use for any kind of venue. Just simply for playing at home with friends/band in the basement or garage."

That's the critical info. Playing at home? That's OK. Jamming metal & goth? Goodbye speakers. Both generes are a high db proposition.

Here's the basis for my reasoning:

I've done extensive stress testing with vintage EV hi-fi speakers, (SP12, Wolverine LS12, etc.) used as musical instrument (MI) speakers using a properly serviced 30 watt RMS tube guitar amp without pushing it into output tube clipping. Here are my results.....

    The glue that is used to attach the spider gives up the ghost real fast. This is common with all "vintage" speakers and is also why NOBODY tours or gigs (for long anyway) with vintage speakers. The vintage adhesives don't have the longevity of modern adhesives and;

Their voice coils cannot withstand a clipped signal for more than a minute or so. Heat build-up warps the V.C. former real fast. Again...it's jsut old technology not appropriate for MI use.

Sure, he (or she) can put them in any cab design he wishes BUT remember, these are hi-fi speakers...NOT MI speakers. They are meant to be REproducers of sound, not producers. They won't hold up and they won't sound that good for guitar.

The reason I'm stating all of this is to hopefully dissuade the OP from destroying some nice vintage fullrange hi-fi speakers. There are less desirable speakers which could be destroyed.

I know that wasn't the question he asked but it's the most real-world and realistic advice he's recieved for the intended application.

Whatever the OP decides, may he/she have a lifetime of fun making music.

I'm not planning to use for any kind of venue. Just simply for playing at home with friends/band in the basement or garage.

Also, using these drivers, I would probably use for only guitars.. not bass. For bass I'd probably do something more like 4x10, 8x10 or 2x12, 4x12.

Depends. If he is playing for his own amazement and amusement at home, they will be just fine. If he is planning on gigging with them he will quickly find out that a 4x8 is going to be woefully inadequate and a 4x12 is the ticket. Then again, they were free.

Personally I am very happy with the little 4x8 that I have. Takes a bit of the low end out of the Paul and the Tele has just the right amount of bite, even for stage in small venues.

I don't like seeing what I consider to be some "classic" EV fullranges used as a guitar speaker, but that was not the question. To each his own.

There you go. I'd build a closed box for them, if it were me.

If you are ever thinking of getting rid of them let me know :D

The Ibanez would be an excellent bass to learn with, though if you were dead set on playing bass. Plus you had the money to drop, I'd look into a Tobias. Amazing basses but they cost a good bit. I play a 5 string Killer and a 4 string Growler.

Yup, actually, a great score since I got them for free!

I actually have a Laguna LE54 HH 6 string and an ESP LTD SC-607B 7 string.
No amp as of now, and no pedals yet. I play metal/goth.

As far as an amp goes, I'll probably need to get a lower power head. Far as I know, these EV Woverines are good for 20 watts rms. So I'm looking at around 80 watts rms for all 4. These are 8 ohm drivers, so or an 8 ohm head I could wire them series parallel to get an 8 ohm load.

I built a great 4x8 cabinet from Weber 8A-110T's > Kicks ****. Sounds better than my Scumbag SA-12M-LHDC which is a very good speaker. I have to qualify this with the fact that this is being driven by a small SE KT66 tube amp that has a very simple vol & tone front end, where most of the overdrive is from the power section. A lot of what makes a speaker cabinet for guitar work is the amp, quitar and musical style combination.

The Wolverines would work great with a high gain amp, humbuckers and hard rock/metal combination in a closed back cabinet. This will help reign in the lows and keep them from sounding farty on big power chords. Small speakers tend to do so. On the other hand, if you are looking at single coils and a classic rock or blues application, I would build a cabinet with a 50% removeable back and see what works best with your gear, closed or open.

What do you have for guitar and amp and what is your musical preference? What pedals do you use?

Dave, the Les Paul and Teles blues guy (it doesnt get much different than those 3 guitars :p )

Oh, yeah: the only pedal I use is a much modified Boss BD-2

    4x8" guitar cab?

I have 4 EV Wolverine LS-8 full range 8" drivers. I've been thinking of building up a 4x8" cab that I can hook up to a good head.

Currently, I only have a limited amount of T/S Parameters. BassBox 6 Pro and WinISD give me very large results for enclosure size.

I don't know if I'd be better off going sealed, vented? Maybe open back?
    Any suggestions?
