  • Can you spell "inconsistent"?

What in the world am I going to do with these? Not exactly what one might call a "matched" pair. I was going to use them as some wide-band midranges, but not anymore, I don't think.

    *sigh*

EDIT: Okay, I was over-reacting. They're still not suitable *to me* as wideband midranges, but if I do something similar to Wolf's treatment of the M4N, I should be able to get some truely "Sophomoric" bass out of them. Ain't ever going to win any SPL drags, but still, I'm eager to hear them sing!

Mail em to me. They look good enough for my tastes.

set one of them a little crooked, maybe it will fix it.:o
If dynamite was dangerous, do you think they'd sell it to an idiot like me?

There are other things, like 4th/5th order peaks around 1khz...

I was about to say, that FR graph doesn't look too horrible. Supposedly it's hard to pick out things that are closer than 3 dB apart, so it would be pretty hard to hear the difference of relative output of one driver compared to the other. If the breakup is really different though, that's another story.

If you bought them from PE, they'd probably exchange one or both.

They were InDIYana freebies. That's why I'm not raising a stink.

I'm sure I'll still find them a home. They're pretty looking drivers. But they won't be used as dedicated midranges.

Hey Dirk. What did you get at InDIYana? PM if you want to keep it on the DL.

                  Dirk,

What exactly is the problem with those two drivers? They look pretty consistent to me???!!!

Maybe I have a skewed perspective or something, but from my experience behind the scenes with the manufacturing side of things, those two look pretty darn close to me. Even in the world of high end drivers, response within a window of 2-3 dB of each other is considered good. Especially in the higher-end breakup region.

                  Darren scratching his head...

Someone please shed some light for me!

                  ;)

                    :o

Okay, fine, maybe I'm being needlessly picky. And maybe I was expecting too much out of a 4" full-ranger that sells for $50. When I step back and compare it to something like the super-popular B3N or the RS100, it performs in between the two.

I shouldn't be surprised that the Qts came in so much higher than spec, and for my use, it wouldn't have mattered. I think I was more bummed by the sensitivity being -4dB lower than spec'd. While I'm all for a full 6dB of baffle step, they are a full -10dB lower than the woofers.

I'll certainly find a use for them! But they took my current plans back to the drawing board. That's just a bit annoying.

                      Dirk,

Is it possible that these two are from different manufacturing lots? The Fs appears to be quite different between the two drivers; much larger difference percentage-wise than what I've seen on any pair of drivers purchased from PE so far. How do the TS params compare?

These weren't purchased, so I don't know their lineage. I don't have T/S for both yet. These were the preliminary graphs back from a fellow community member that measures stuff. I'm biting my tongue (and mostly failing) until he gets his chance to post full results.

I'm betting you did, but did you allow them any break-in time? Parameters in most drivers will shift all over the place for the first few hours of use.
