Be warned - both of the designers above believe in using crossover componentry that costs more than the rest of the speakers. This is hardcore tomfoolery. Troel seems more interested in the overall science of design, though.
I would love to hear and see what everyone thinks is the best DIY 2-way out there.
Fullrange, dynamic, imaging...
Me too. And while we are at it, let's also see what everyone thinks is the best beer. And best car. And best looking woman. And best football team. And best....well, you catch the drift;).
All I have to say is that I put together Zaph's ZD5 2-ways and was amazed. I took them to my brother's house last Friday night and he thought they were great too.
They especially sound good with Jack Johnson's music.

I have collected all the drivers and am getting ready to build Roman's Asterions.
I have the drivers in some test cabinets and have been using a Rane two way xover to get an idea what they might sound like. Even my wife liked them and she is very picky.
Yo Dan, this kind of speaker setup probably needs a sub, right? I can't see playing rock group Bad Company at full volume, bass structure of the audio I think would be extremely weak but on the other hand these speakers would work well for classical music. :D

? "Classical music"? What are you talking about? (Certainly not cellos, kettle drums, pipe organs, and the like...)

Classical recordings have the highest dynamic range. A typical rock recording, like Bad Company, Metallica, etc, will run in the 5:1 range of peak to average rating, meaning that you'd need a 50W amp to get 10W of music power to the speakers without clipping. You'd need at least a 100W amp, and sometimes more than 500W to keep that same average 10W music power without clipping the peaks for a good classical orchestral recording.
Those little monitors you so willingly chide will sound great with most rock recordings because those recordings don't have any bass content below 50Hz in most cases. It's the classical passages it will struggle with!!!
I like three ways for that reason, but a multi-woofer two-way, like Paul K's Marcatos which use exceptional woofers have a much better chance at handling the transients than just a TM two way.
But here's what I've noticed...with the exception of a couple of Krutke's designs and one from Roman, nobody has stuck their double-pennies into the fray.
