  • My Accuton project

This has been in the works for a very long time, but I'm finally listening to the pair. I'd like to put out a big thanks to Lou Coraggio for all of his help with the cabinets and Clayton Oxendine for his help with the crossover (which I've since modified.)

Drivers are C12-6, C89-13, and C95-6. The 7" drivers each have their own variovent. The 5" drivers are sealed. The tweeter to upper mid crossover is a series network at 5kHz. (How it sounds as good as it does crossed over that high is a wondrous mystery) The 5" drivers have no high pass network except for the cabinet, and the 7"s sneak in at about 300Hz. (Still tweaking this, but could happily live with where it's at right now.)

Past projects include using the C23, the C95 (running as a midrange driver), and SCC300 (a BRILLIANT driver IMHO.)

I had a brother of a friend (who's a cabinet maker) do the veneering, and an incredibly flakey car painter mess up.........errrr........I mean.....uh..... paint the front baffles. No, I didn't do these all by myself but I did plenty. I certainly stressed out about them!!!

Various parts of the building process can be found on my completely neglected My Space page:

what is the sub? I always wanted to use the accuton's but they are costly.

Tell me that's not an Accuton with its cone destroyed in the third picture from the left!

The lure of Accuton midranges has been strong for me. Perhaps someday. Not sure I'd spring for their tweeters or bass units, though.

The Subs (one for each side) are Rythmik (sp?) Audio subs (kits)

Yes, I've got a couple of demolished accuton drivers. What can I say? Sh!t happens. I just hate it when it's the expensive stuff!!!

I don't understand why you are not using a high pass network on the 5" mids. The proper network will increase power handling/decrease distortion, and dramatically with moderate to high SPL conditions, as well as allowing for more ideal integration with the woofers, if the networks are matched properly.

              Hey Chris,

No argument from me on your observation. However, where I find most of the "magic" in my listening is in the lower level material (in my orchestral CD's) or music with a vocalist. I tend to prefer the little extra.....hmmmm, I'll use the word: purity that comes with not having a high pass network involved on a midbass driver. All of us here know that three ways are more difficult to put together. If I was to have gone with a real three way, I certainly would NOT have gone with the C89. I would have used the C79 or C90, but I'm not that brave. (The C79 has a reputation of being very tricky to work with)

              Hey Nick,

Yes, I like MIT. The latest "Dot 2" upgrade made a big difference, especially on the V3 speaker cables.

                  Re: My Accuton project

Well, LouC's helped my in my plunge to tackle a true 3 way by coming up with an initial prototype crossover utilizing the C79's

instead of the 2.5 way I had initially come up with using the C89s

This is also my first foray into using a crossover design aid. (LspCAD)

Initial impressions are, well......impressive! ;) While the C89 is certainly a warmer sounding driver and very easy to work with, the C79 runs circles around it when it comes to sheer resolution. I'm sure I'll be running through a few iterations of crossovers and snake oil audiophool boutique crossover parts to get the sound "just right" (I can hear LouC laughing his a$$ off now), but that's half the fun (i.e. insanity). :D

Moi, laugh at you? We've had far too much fun needling each other over the years --great entertainment.

After all the hours you put in on those, (and the countless hours you'll no doubt spend tweaking them) I hope I live long enough to hear you say they are "done". ;)
I'll look forward to hearing them when your amp gets back.

As we used to say in the coal mine, "It's your soap & your johnson, wash it as long and hard as you want..." :D

                      Re: My Accuton project

Pretty cool baffle design, and I love that dyed BirdsEye veneer.

Lobing from high tweeter crossover and CTC spacing is something that's stressed way too much on the intrawebs. In reality it's often inaudible inside a 15 degree listening window, which all of us are in when we're actually listening. I have no problem believing that a 5khz xover works well.

                        Re: My Accuton project

The current crossover is relatively simple parallel crossover. I was worried that the C79 was a wicked beast to tame, but so far it doesn't seem to be the case.

Here's a link to the veneer used:

I love a lot of the natural warm tone exotic veneers, but browns and gold colors would (obviously) stick out like a sore thumb in my room.
