  • $500 HT towers Project?

I am new to the site and have been reading about diy speakers for a few months. I am pretty good with carpentry and electronics, and am looking to start my home theater. I am a student and want to keep the drivers and components around $500, understanding that wood and staining supplies will be extra. I want to build a pair of 2 or 3 way speakers to be my mains. Can anybody recomend the best project for my situation? Listening will be %90 movies, %10 music. Thanks for any help.

For what you are looking for I would suggest the Tritrix http://www.parts-express.com/project...roject=Tritrix. Try looking at the PE project Showcase and find something you like and then ask for feedback on it here. I'm sure others will chime in as well.

How many speakers? Just mains? Or a complete HT setup?

For now just the mains. The main ones I have been reading about are the veritas, Dayton RS TMWW, Schtick, and the mini statements. Are any of these good for HT use are would something else be better.

Consider the Dayton DIII's (D3 's) nobody seems to talk about them anymore, I built a modified version about 3-4 years ago and was fairly impressed with them. They will need some equalization on the low end in my opinnion.

I believe there is an article on the in the project showcase, but you can also google Dayton DIII or Dayton D3

I also looked at the tritrix but figured since i have a little extra money right now I might as well build the best I can afford.

Well for a little over $500 I could build 3 D3's and the tritrix's, would this be a decent system with the tritrix's as mains with a D3 center and D3 surrounds or should I start with better mains and build the rest as I get more money?

If you think you are never going to upgrade, then this setup will do the trick. However, the Statement line probably rivals 5 times it's cost in performance of many well known retail speakers.

I am a student, so I plan on upgrading many times. I am just looking to start a system with what I can afford right now and upgrading as I get older. My original plan was to build mains now, and build more components as I get money.

Look for a reasonably good center channel, even if you plan on leaving it out of the initial setup. When you find a good one, build the matching mains. Later if you want a center it will be a lot easier, as you will have already identified the matching piece. It is not always easy to match the center to the mains. The center can be much more difficult to get right, and when you do use a center, that is where a lot of the film dialog is sent, making it very important to get that right.

Would this be tritrix towers as mains and the smaller tritrix as the center channel?

                            Yessir.....

Though I think you could mix that Tritrix center with just abut all I mentioned due to them using mostly the dayton classic line I believe..... I am/was/not sure yet about building the tritrix center to go with my D8's......
