  • "Biumph", aka- "Triumph V2"...

I was informed today that the Peerless 5.25" passives for the "Triumph" project are NLA.

Therefore, I made an adjustment to the design, and still have a lot of performance for a 9/9.5" cube.

I lost just a hair of extension ( 40 Hz to now 43 Hz), but the Xmax chart is actually a little more agreeable/linear than the last one. Just add 26g mass to the Dayton SD215-PR.

As before, you can substitute the KG3100 for the Dayton 25W (with high inputs sealed) pictured, and the 70W (with chamber removed, and high inputs sealed) will probably still shoehorn in place. This PR adaptation is actually a bit less expensive too. Feel free to rearrange the PR/amp/1138 as you wish, but keep the amp and PR mounted on the sides, please.

I can bet this little booger will still suffice for PC's the world around, as well as minimal bedroom HT's.

Wolf, thanks for updating this design. It is nice to have a great performing, very small sub for small bedroom or dorm room 2.1 systems.

After looking into the added hassle and cost of buying some of the last remaining peerless passives from EU or Canada, I will be going to the new version with the Dayton 8" passive.

I will post a pic once I have it finished.

Thanks again for a great design, Andy.

I look forward to it, and hope it at least compares to the previous one. Since you have built the original as well, I hope you post your comments in comparison for a reference.

        Wolf,
I have this project on my radar and since I already have the parts and the build is so simple it might actually get done.

        Question:
I have the 25w amp but I am looking at an option that might bump it up to 60w or so. I was curious about what your thoughts were on excursion issues at different power levels.

I'd really like to use one of the 2.1 plate amp options but the value on those just doesn't seem to be worth it especially considering I already have other "paid for" options available.

Thanks for the documentation on this project. I've looked at it several times. I plan on using this to suppliment some small DIY speakers (R4 or R44 probably) with the TV in our bedroom. Should sound nice I think.

        Thanks,
        Aaron

The 1138 won't like the power that high. It will breach above 50W continuous. You'll be surprised how much the 25W will do. If you want to up the power, don't exceed 50W. The KG3100 would be a perfect match with the Biumph/Triumph and a set of small sats.

Let me know if you require any more info.

            Wolf,
Read your reply on the 60w amp, thanks...

Not a big deal on 50w vs 60. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off, I can always dial it back some. Also wanted to verify that the PR's were up to the task. For PR's I am planning on trying a pair of OLD Infinity 6.5 woofers w/ the magnets removed. One of them is blown and I'm not sure I can find it (might have thrown it out in the past 15-20 years:eek. I used that as an excuse to buy some other Infinity PR's off of eBay recently. The price was less than $20 shipped.
            Thanks,
            Aaron

You can't change a PR without changing the design, and I can't even verify whether it will work or not. Most standard-driver suspensions are not meant to support that much over all mass.
I'm advising you against that approach, as I have no info for the PR's you speak of. You're essentially on your own in that line of design.

                Re: "Biumph", aka- "Triumph V2"...

Appreciate the warning, I know I will have some testing to do to get the tuning right, I am considering going to the purpose built Infinity passives over the modded drivers since that is closer to what they are designed for.

I do have a way to measure my final tuning but Im not sure how to tell how/if the passives are maxing out. I'm still working on seeing if there is a way to get enough data from the working PR donor driver to model it as a PR before I take it apart. They look cool and I have no other use for them.
                Thanks,
                Aaron

                  You'd need at least 2 6.5" PR's, or a single 8".

                    Re: "Biumph", aka- "Triumph V2"...

                    Hi Wolf,

A quick question about how you determined an added mass of 26g per radiator... (I'm the guy you were nice enough to help design a 10" variation of the Triska sub in Unibox). I see that in the Mmp section there is a figure of 100.9 grams of mass - how does this translate into 26grams of added mass to the pr's... or am I looking at this incorrectly?

The long and short of it... I came up with a figure of 180grams in the mmp section of unibox and have gotten a few different answers as to what the "real mass" is that should be added to the pr's. I'm worried that I may have a design error, as the reccomended mass for these dayton 10" radiators is not to exceed 100 grams.

Here is a snapshot of the screen:

I hope I'm not hijacking a thread here... it's certainly not my intention.

I'm at the point where my sub will be assemled this weekend, just doing my piano black finish and then a formal build thread to follow.

                    Thanks,

                    Johnny Ravo

                      Re: "Biumph", aka- "Triumph V2"...

First off- you need to engage the LP filter for a general Plate-amp for a better predicion. If you are just adjusting the mass value and nothing else, you aren't doing the simulation correctly. There are toggles below to shift mass up/down, and everything else adjusts on the fly as you go.

The 10" can hold 200g, so it's not an issue. Apparently you are using the catalog specs I assume, as my model with your criteria won't match up.

I stand by my previous recommendation, due to what I just modeled, and will still say you won't get much below 33 Hz without it breaching Xmax... 26-28g looks really good in 44 ltrs as you have stated.

Thanks once again for your guidance, Wolf!

This is all so new to me, I just want to make sure I'm understanding what I'm doing along the way.

And a +1 for me using the catalog specs:o

                        28grams it is!
