sketchup is cool for visualization, much faster than autocad 3d. It isn't precise, though, at least not the free version I have.
Also, I don't believe dowel braces are as good as shelves or ribs. Better than nothing, though.
The free version allows you to type in precise amounts when creating primitives, moving and rotating, etc. You can then dimension your objects and it shows the exact dimensions properly...

gotta keep the line as clear as possible, and a dowel works great for that. I'd think that the dowels mounted side to side in that fashion would do a lot to reduce flexing in the side panels, which also have that angled baffle to stiffen them up.
It can be quite precise too, since you can type in the coordinates as you draw the shape to get it exactly where you want it.
